Increase boot speed Dramatically

1. Open notepad.exe, type "del c:\windows\prefetch\ntosboot-*.* /q" (without the quotes) & save as "ntosboot.bat" in c:\
2. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "gpedit.msc".
3. Double click "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration" and double click again on "Shutdown" in the right window.
4. In the new window, click "add", "Browse", locate your "ntosboot.bat" file & click "Open".
5. Click "OK", "Apply" & "OK" once again to exit.
6. From the Start menu, select "Run..." & type "devmgmt.msc".
7. Double click on "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
8. Right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and select "Properties".
9. Select the "Advanced Settings" tab then on the device 0 or 1 that doesn't have 'device type' greyed out select 'none' instead of 'autodetect' & click "OK".
10. Right click on "Secondary IDE channel", select "Properties" and repeat step 9.
11. Reboot your computer.

--------------------------------------------------

This is working very well for me. Those who use windows XP my have noticed that moving block at bootup. Before these setting my PC usually took 16 round, now it takes only one or two.

I don't know what this thing does, can someone explain me if there are any downsides of this.

XP boots up in ~45 seconds for me, and that includes the time it takes for me to type my password.

Usually antivirus programs are the main culprits in an unusually slow bootup time. Try that bootvis proggy.

Systemsuite 4.0 is what kills me. It's about 15 secs, by what I remember (25 with SP1). I'm always in the bathroom when it's booting up.

Since my PC is on 24/7... decreasing boottime isn't an issue for me...

This ought to be in software... moving.

BTW My desktop shell slows my bootup quite considerably.

the best thing to do for boot speed boost is to actually reformatt your drive and start anew (install the os again after format). that's the only way to get rid of useless crap that windows stores.

I used to see that big moving block on my old Celeorn 300@450. But since I upgraded to my 900 I don't see it at all. Thanks for the tip Ali! Maybe it's my UDMA100 Hard Disk that sped it up...
