Smartripper is good for ripping DVDs.

BTW, shouldn't this belong in the software section?

I believe they're currently only focusing on psx emulation. I wouldn't expect a ps2 emulator from the epsxe team for a long time.

Demigod, can the Smartstripper rip the dvd into divx format? As in *.avi? I dont want to convert them into vcds. Do you know how? Or is there another software that can do this aside than smartStripper?

As yeloazndevil already mentioned, DVD rippers will rip the *.VOB files from the DVD. You then need an encoding program like XMPEG or VirtualDub to turn the VOB files into a DivX AVI.

Completely off topic, but when you said that, I got images of the entire ePSXe team vacationing together. That brought even more disturbing thoughts to mind. All I have to say is that you are a SICK man.

u rip the vob files, then they need to be laced/stitched if you would, together, so TMPEnc can read it and encode it. Thats for making VCD's.

He inquired about DivX AVIs, not VCDs. For DivX encoding Xmpeg (or FlaskMPEG) or VirtualDub are best.

Uhh, you don't necessarily need DVD2AVI. FlaskMPEG and Xmpeg can use the .IFO file to compile the .VOB files into a single AVI (Xmpeg requires the DVD ISM plug-in).

Thats fine if you have a huge hdd. You need atleast 1.2gb for the vob files, then about another 1gb for the completed movie. I find it better to encode it into an vcd mpg, and burn it as a vcd. Thus, freeing hdd space, and getting the same movie quality as having it as a (bigger) avi file.

1.2 GB? For what movie? Most DVD movies are around 4-5 GB (4 or 5 VOB files, each 1 GB in size). DivX allows an awesome quality/compression ratio and will often allow you to make near-DVD quality movies at a fraction of the size (thus its' immense popularity). You can easily compress a 6 GB DVD movie into a 700 MB DivX AVI with minimal loss in quality. There are bit rate controls as well so you can adjust the quality and size. Generally I try to aim for 700 MB so I can burn the movie onto a 700 MB CD. Certain longer movies (e.g. saving private ryan) may require larger files for good quality and for them I use VirtualDub to cut the AVI so I can burn them to CDs. VCDs are alright, but DivX is a lot higher quality. If you've ever seen a good DivX movie then you'd know.

Yes, i know they are more like 5bg, thats why i said atleast 1.2gb.

Lets agree there are many differnt ways of making illegal copies of movies, and that everyone has their ways of doing it.
