Sharing files b\w laptop and desktop

OK i got a laptop with a cd writer which i wanna connect to my desktop so that the data which i wanna write can be tranfered to the laptop and i could then burn it.Both have got a lan card i know it can be done just dont know the steps.Please help :confused:

what OS are on the pcs?
you need a crossover cable to connect them. you may or may not have to assign IPs and stuff so see what happens first.

the laptop has windows 2000 and my desktop has windows 98 second edition.

In LAN port cables there are 4 wires that are used. 1,2,3 and 6. 1and 2, 3 and 6 have to be pairs of colours (Orange/White orange and Gree/White green) The crossover cable swaps which way round these two pairs are.

Don't you need a router or hub to hook two patch cable ethernet cards together? I don't think you can DCC them.

With a crossover cable, like what I described, 2 computers can be directly linked. You can get a couple of yards of it from your local computer shop. Just ask for crossover.

If you don't use crossover, Esturk, yes you do have to use a hub/switch/router.

Nope, I used to do it between 2 of my computers before I had cable internet. A crossover cable will do the job just fine. You of course have to set it up as an IPX network though. (I could never get a TCP/IP network working.)

well you can do the crossed link cable as kane said just search the web for rj-45 crossed link cable and you should be able to wire the cable correctly. I made one myself to connect my two computers and share my internet connection, first I used the ICS feature in Win98, after I set up a small home network on XP and it works fine.
Esturk this way you can get a 100Mbps transfer rate between two computers without a hub as kane said, more reliable than the RS-232.
Of course you need a couple of NICs and with XP you can setup your 2 computers network funtion easily.

Both my computers have 10/100 Ethernet Cards, however the other computer is a P133 running Windows 95b. ICS is't supported in 95. I tried 98FE on the P133 but it seemed sluggish. 95 runs PERFECT on the little P133 with 32Mb's of ram. The Null Modem cable works great for Warcraft II and Diablo though. But I will definately get a crossover cable anyways. That way I won't have to get a hub just to hook up two computers.

yes you save up the hub/switch with the cable. I also have my old PI 133MHz with my other computer and you're right when I had win95 on the PI is was a lot faster than with win98.
It doesn't matter if your p133 has win 95 or 98 or ME, XP makes a configuration floppy to set up the client computers IIRC, nothing beyond any mortal can do

I think it's good to have a hub/router, in case you got new computers and wanna hook them up.

I used to use crossover cable as well... don't lose as much packets as through hub cuz it's directly between 2 NICs, right?

Neighter a cable nor a hub should ever lose any packets when there are only 2 computers connected in an undisturbed network.

connect the cable between the two NICs and now turn on both computers As I don't know which OS you're using, In win98SE go to the control panel and then add/remove programs then click on the windows setup or someting like that tab, in the internet explorer check if you have instaled the Internet conection sharing if not install it, after that you can run the setup wizzard and will prpmpt you to insert a diskette, this diskette is necesary to set up the client computer.
If using XP, go to network conections, the in the netwoks tasks click on the "create a new connection" and follow the wizzard.
