So you live in Asia too, Xeven? That must be one part of the plan revealed...
Because...they are easy to pirate? DVD's are quickly gaining reputation in here tho.

One other reason is region codes, or the distinct lack of them in vcds. Most of Asia falls into reion 3, except china which is 6 and japan which is 2. Anyways in general the higher the region code the longer you have to wait on the "offical" DVD disk.

That region coder thing is really dumb, it doesn't prevent piracy. The system is simply so that you can't buy a DVD in Europe and bring it over to the US. The movie industry (MPAA) just wants you to buy the movie over again.

VCDs will probably die once DVD-writers become mainstream (affordable, dirt cheap). But I still see some hope left for CD-writers if ever that happens.

DIVX CERTIFICATION PROGRAM (http://www.divxnetworks.com/certified/about.php)

Electronics mogul Phillips is already a member. They'll be working hand in hand with the DivX people to develop DivX-compatible hardware, in short, DivX players.

DivX movie playback is now possible on PS2s, thanks to the new QCast Tuner Software (http://www.broadq.com/).

Heck, wala rin palang epekto yung mga raid ni VRB chair Bong Revilla. I can still see some ppl selling the stuff in Colon St. here in Cebu.

Question: who started this VCD thing anyway? And how come it never took off in the States like it did here in Asia?

I agree that its pointless. Heck any moviephile worth any grain of salt uses a multiregion player anyways.

Because Korea is at the early stage of DVDs right now. Its a little popular I should say right now but not much as VCDs. I seen Gladiator sell more on a 8cd VCD package then the DVD one. Hrm...guess why? Its cheaper and more popular still. Also you dont need a fancy nice looking DVD Player or a DVD-Rom.
