*sigh* (Dreads seeing the inevitable vote for Windows ME)

I am really stuck between voting for Linux or Windows XP. I like gaming, so I like XP, but then again, nothing beats Linux.... hmmm... I think I will vote XP for it's stability and power.

Windows XP?? It is a RAM drainer, it takes up too much, and goes to slow, I must say Linux is really good, and secure, but Win 98 SE it took about 32 RAM to start it up, and 166MHz, Win XP takes likes 366MHz off of my processor and about 150MB of RAM, then again maybe it is just my computer though....

Well, on my computer I only lost about 20 3DMarks moving to Windows XP from 98. I have enough memory that I can afford to give 100MB to my OS. I figure that the stability and networking features make up for a lot of it.

Still, I think that 98 would have been one of my next choices. Even though the difference in performance was minimal on my computer, it still is the best OS for gaming. The only problem was all those BSODs that I got.

WinXP is the best, the most stable one, I have been using win98 and winME and they crashed all the time...

I lost over 2000 3damarks going from XP to ME (which in my experience was faster than 98SE).
My games speed was a quarter (both opengl and D3d). Max Payne in XP ALWAYS runs over 60fps. In me and 98SE it's in the bloody 30's at max. Other games just become unbearably slow. BTW I had ME tweaked and all my hardware oc'd.
That isn't the worst. I boot into XP with 60mb of ram used. In ME I have something like 200mb+ eaten up and even more in 98SE. I hae a total of 768mb of ram.
9x kernel is the worst I have ever seen. I didn't hesitate even for a second to go back to XP.

Hhhmmmm.... I never did like ME or NT, XP is alright I will give that much, but for some obscure reason it takes 140+MB of RAM, and I have clocked my processor a couple of times and it leaves me about 647MHz (lowest) to 950MHz (perfect day) of processor speed for games, so with 647MHz and only 100 RAM or so left, my games just dont run that well. If it would leave my freakin RAM alone and my Processor alone I would give it a stable rating, but I still like Linux quite a bit, you dont have to worry about all the proprietary Microsoft stuff constintly bugging you one way or another, and virus are much more rare in Linux, but like the poll said this is for the majority but if someone has a clue why XP takes up so much of my system let me know what the problem is...

Try disabling the services that you don't need. That worked pretty good for me.

I'd love to vote for DOS, but it can no longer run my games. The only Viable operating system is the Windows enviorment I'm afraid. XP is the most stable version of that, and I'm fine with the system requirements as it runs beautifully on my machine.

it all depends on what ur using the OS for. Linux is great for businesses, professionals, and wannabe pros (me ). XP is good for the average user who just wants to connect to the internet and the new game they bought to work. I'm torn, so I won't vote.

I'm using Windows 2000 and i'm very happy with it. It's stable and its really quick on my system (except when it starts up, the stupid task bar takes forever to load up and I only have 2 icons in the system tray ). I also have Windows 98 but thats for the odd game that doesn't work with 2k (NFS High Stakes, VGS and Descent 1/2, mainly). I have Linux on this machine as well, but when I upgraded to Mandrake 8.2 I screwed up the instalation some how and I don't know how to fix it. I'm too much of a newbie to Linux to know how to fix it. I guess I have to reinstall it.

My vote goes to Windows XP. Besides from the gaming support it's the best Windows system I've used. I've yet to give Linux a chance on my system but I don't see why I should use it. All my programs are Win32 and I don't have the time to make use of a new OS.

> Well, on my computer I only lost about 20 3DMarks moving to Windows XP from 98.

3DMark isn't the most reliable program to judge real-world performance. My score is pretty much the same in both OSes but I can clearly see a performance difference between the two. My Windows ME system always runs games faster than XP. I've done direct comparisons before and ME just runs games that much smoother.

Welll this poll seems to come up with a lot of varied responses... some not even on the poll but so far it seems as if Win XP is doing good.... it does help alot to take off unneeded services, and startup stuff. Well then I guess it just boils down to the purpose of the OS, lest it be gaming, support, speed, stability, hacking, security, and so on and so forth, I hope that the next of Microsoft's products comes out with less requirements though and less BS to startup, remember DOS how fast it started? And those processors were slower, I hope MS can take the hint and make bootup faster, and the actual OS less dependent on Processor and RAM quality... well thanks for signing the poll, I am gonna leave it up longer just to get a more wide-spread opinion.

well...... I think that DOS is the best one.... powerful, stable... and you can always develop some stuff if you have the correct programming experience..... it is a fundamental thing...
