If you were re-encoding, the original video data could have been corrupted in some way.

Most codecs have built-in systems to prevent minor errors in the video stream from disrupting playback.

To check if there's a video error, load the file in VirtualDub and use:

Video -> Scan video stream for errors...

It's a great way to compress your larger-sized files (preferrably using DivX). Anime's, anyone?

When I have video's like that, I MPeg encode them with TMpeg, then use FlaskMPEG to put it in AVI form.

Personally I have given up on DiVX. I rip the DVD to hard disk and use TMPeg to convert to VCD. Only for backup purposes of course.

i use radlight cos its faster than that SHi...hm... you get with divx 5. and as for virtual dub. you can encode into various video formats and split avi files into 2 smaller ones. you can also use it for video filtering,or playback of unfinished downloaded avi files
