Disable vsync?

How do i disable vsync? I need to know where the option is to disable vsync. Am i able to disable a option somewhere in Windows XP or does it depend on the PC game i am using? I am running a Geforce 4 MX 440 graphics card running the latest detonator drivers. I know there is an option to disable it in openGL, (which i have turned off) but i need to know where to look for the one that will disable it in D3D. The reason that i want to do this is becuase i want to see what kind of a performance diferance it makes to some of the games that i have. Any help will be grateful.

get a tweak utility for your vidcard like geforcetweak or nvmax. They will allow you to turn of vsync.
Depending on the game it can enhance performance quite a lot (I have it almost always turned off)

I'm probably being picky now, but is there absolutely no way of turning it off without downloading another program?

Thanks for the help. (in advance)

certain old detonators have the option, and you might be able to find it in the windows registry, though I dont know where.

you can also download a tweak util, install it, disable vsync, uninstall util.

I believe you are able to disable vsync with the latest drivers in the driver options without having coolbits enabled, but mayhap my memory is faulty in that area. They're in the opengl/d3d tabs which is in the additional properties of the geforce tab which is in the advanced setting of the display properties settings tab. Hmm ... that's a backwards way of telling it. Neat.

There's a pulldown menu for OpenGL, but none for D3D atm. That's in 28.32

Yeah i found the one in the openGL tab, but there isn't one in the D3D one. Its ok now though. I got the Geforce Tweak Utility. Its pretty good. I was actually able to squeeze out a few more frames as well after i disable the vsync. So i got a bonus for the download. Not only was i able do deactivate the vsync in D3D, which gave me somewhat of a good FPS increase but i also tweaked a few more options and get a couple more frames out of it. So yeah i am quite happy now.

To disable D3D in the driver's, goto D3D settings and at the bottom should be a buttom caled "More Direct3D" across from "restore defaults".. the option for Vsync and frame read-ahead buffer are in there.

It may require enabling coolbits though. I don't recall and am too lazy to experiment with it right now.

They are not in there i checked and double checked, htere is no option to disable vsyinc for direct 3D in display propeties. Its ok though i am now having fun mucking around with the Geforce Tweaking utility.
