I have to be signed onto AOL first before I can use Internet explorer. I'm not getting this, your suppose to be online all the time as long as your cable modem is on. Can anyone help me out?

I have Shaw Cable internet where I live. All I have to do to set it up is type in the proxy server. No extra software required. I don't know how AOL handles it though. Perhaps you have a proxy address too?

I also have a cable modem connection and no problem at all (NOT AOL ISP).
As you say your ISP is forcing you to sign in under its page. AOL policies I guess, pretty annoying. Ask AOL if you have to do that each time. Better check the Automatic detect setting on the image provided by Esturk and uncheck everything at the proxy settings. Hope it helps |

I used to be an installer for DirecPC/DirecWay and that's how they ran their AOL Powered by DirecPC program. You actually do have to be connected to AOL, because they are your ISP. It's just like other Broadband offers. If you signup for Qwest High Speed Internet, MSN becomes your ISP. It takes a combination of these two to truly be connected to the net. So, I'm sorry to say, but if you're not connected to AOL, you're not online
![]() Also, why don't you just drop the AOL and go with AIM to chat with your friends? It works just as good, if not, better.

AOL are like that. They try to do it with dial up, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did something like that, however, you should just be able to run IE.

There isn't a way to override this. AOL is your ISP!!! You connect to the Internet through AOL and you connnect to AOL through your cable modem. It's that simple. You can't directly dialup into the Internet. You need an ISP, ie: Earthlink, MSN, AOL. It's the same way with broadband, only same providers make it invisible, providing both the connection and the ISP. This is not one of those deals as it probably states somewhere in the TOS. Also, it's the exact same way for users who dialup into AOL. How are they supposed to get onto the Internet without first connecting to AOL? Simple answer: they can't!! Why don't you just connect to AOL, then minimize it and open IE separately. You CAN do that, you know. There's really no way out of this other than switching providers.

I agree with ShADoWFLaRe85. If that's the way AOL works then just stick with it, or switch to another ISP. Just because you have cable doesn't mean you can connect directly to the internet without the ISP. You still have to connect through them and they have full control over your connection.

BtW. esturk do you have to configure everything to use the proxy??? i had shaw cable b4 andi didnt have to configure any proxys? |

I don't have to configure anything actually. It works on automatic but I like to put the proxy in myself anyways. I have it memorized.

Well, broadband doesn't necessarily have to be on all the time. DSL is broadband as well but you still have to connect to the ISP to get connected to the internet. Sympatico DSL also disconnects you automatically if you're idle for 30 minutes. It's kind of annoying. I was over at my friend's house installing some stuff on his computer and I was puzzled as to why I couldn't browse the internet even though he had a broadband connection, until I remembered that with DSL you have to log in first. With most cable connections the log-in process is automatic and invisible but you still do have to log in properly (usually by the computer name or the modem serial number).

install win98 se or higher and use internet sharing.
it can be found start>settings>control panel>network just click add and it is somwhere in the list. it works great so you would not encounter many problems. |
