Well you went about it the wrong way, should always go with the text installer, it might be ugly, but you have more control and its a hell of a lot less confusing, weirdly enough.

What is the text installer and how to set it up?

it should be one of the boot options, altho nanaya says its on a separate disc

once you've booted it, its pretty straightforward, very clear instructions on what its doing and what each option will do for each step of the process.

it should look something like this

partitions manually shows the entire disk blank.
That's just how the graphical tool shows it in that step, after you click next it should be ok and show the proper partitions. Or do you mean that after you select select partitions manually, in the next screen the partition editor shows the entire disk as blank?

that still doesn't explain it showing 18 exabytes of freespace (twice), either somethings wrong with that program or his partition table. I'm betting its the program.

Would recommending newbies to use WUBI to install be a bad idea? Seems improved enough to me.

That was going to be my suggestion for Silenus as well. Forget all about partitioning and use Wubi.

It makes sense for a server OS to have a CLI. Why waste resources on a GUI when the only meaningful thing that the machine is going to do is serve web pages or track torrents?

For desktop distros though, it seems like there's a GUI way to do most things that used to require whipping out the command line. Though, I can usually copy and paste a few commands quicker than I can reenact GUI instructions.

Wubi is a good suggestion but it does have a small performance loss and according to Wikipedia isn't meant for permanent installations.

I found this tool UNetbootin because my CD Drive is kaput and this seems the only way out. It looks good and seems worth a shot.

Apparently it should be able to recognize the partition and install on it from your Ubuntu ISO file as long as there's a drive letter marking the partition as a separate Hard Disk

The performance hit is due to the installation's file system existing on an image file, which, in turn, exists inside of another file system. (It means disk access will be slightly more time-consuming.) As long as the image file isn't heavily fragmented (try defragmenting your drive before installing Wubi) the hit should be pretty minimal. Aside from that, there's little to no difference between a Wubi installation and a regular Ubuntu installation. In fact, it's even possible to migrate the former to its own partition and turn it into the latter.

Just installed it, first impression was "wow, no more bright orange, nice! " but after surfing a bit i got horrible lag then a total lockup, have to manual reset. Turn out to be flash problem, okay.. turning flash off resolve it.
Then I proceed to install Ati driver and finally some eye candy but, ugh everything is sluggish, have to search a few site to enable some exotic option on xorg.conf and still have perf problem, they say the x.org have to be patched or wait for a new version, oh well...
Like always mp3 and other video have to be installed first, it's easy though, so no big deal.
I'll try kde later, installing it via synaptic.

I've downloaded Kubuntu since KDE seems to have more eye-candy judging from the screenshots; will install it on VM when I get time and can be bothered to xD

I'm actually looking forward to this now that I have Nvidia card, at least I can safely say that Cairo Dock won't lag as if it's being run on a Pentium MMX like it did when I installed Ubuntu on my previous ATI card.

yeah I'm thinking I shouldn't mess with this anymore.

What I found strange is that using the try feature, all my drivers are working, so If I get to install this correctly I won't have any problems.

Wireless and graphic drivers are working okay.

I wish I had another hd and make a backup to format my entire disk and partition it correctly.

I don't know if one of the causes of my problem is that I formatted the first partition where Asus Express gate was and that's where I want to install Ubuntu.

Okay that's it, I've learned my lesson. Done nothing but wasting time with linux and ati, I've learned my lesson the hard way.
I'll try Linux for desktop again after they've fixed it or after I've bought an Nvidia card.

Silenus : Why don't you try installing it via VM? maybe you'll think that isn't worth it after you've tried it...

Hmm... how many partitions do you have? It may have to do with the fact that grub (or any boot loader) cannot boot Windows using logical partitions without some work, and only from primary partitions (and normally it is recommended for the first partition in your system to be a primary partition). Just an idea.

/me looked at the images above. Hmm... only 3 partitions... but still you'd need one for the swap partition (the equivalent of virtual memory in windows), so that'd make it 4 partitions, which is more than the limit of primary partitinos you can have...

I heard that I don't need the swap partition as I have sufficient memory.
Or am I wrong??

Well soon I'll get another hd for my laptop, will back up all my data, then reinstall windows 7 on my primary partition from the hd, then will go from there.
