just tried it on my old pc (p4 2.6 ghz, 512mb ram) and it boots just as fast as win 7 on my gaming pc. and each release the ease of use gets more refined. too bad i still cant get the nvidia legacy drivers for the geforce 256 in that old pc to work still...

Haven't reinstalled Linux since Gutsy. What's new this time around?

Linux would gain an extra 23% market share overnight if they simply got rid of that friggin penguin.

Guys I still have a problem with my partitions, ubuntu doesn't detect my windows 7 partition.

my win 7 partition is on sda1, but is not shown when I'm trying to install ubuntu.

^ I encountered the same problem during my installation of ubuntu 8.10 and I "solved" the problem by throw away the burned ubuntu disc and redownload Fedora 10 and install

however here's someone else's experience about how to fix it, not sure if it will work:

press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to console during the "partition" step if it's shown as blank, type "sudo umount -l isodevice" and press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to switch back to X. The partitions should appear in a short while.

lol that's another thing Linux needs to do to get ahead of Windows: Eliminate the need to use the terminal at all. Yes it's quick and fun for all you hard-core Linux users, but for the average user its just down-right frustrating.

Can it see your other partitions? are they shown with the correct size?

That makes no sense as they both use the same partition editor, GNU Parted

Try to delete the partition so it become a free space, then format it as ext4 on the Ubuntu partition manager. Always work for me.
I've heard somewhere Ubuntu 9.10 has problem dual booting with windows 7 though...

did they update ntfs again for windows 7? That might be it. GRUB might not recognize it with the automagic list, but you can try doing it manually, since you know where the partition is on the map.

@silenus, I meant if you could see the rest of your partitions at the correct sizes in Ubuntus partition editor, not windows.

does "specify partitions manually" show the separate partitions (even if the one with windows on it is shown as "unknown")

thats weird cuz the first screenshot shows them as being separate, not to mention the extremely large partitions under both of them, there's something wonky here, is there a way to boot just the ubuntu installer and not the full OS

There's an option iirc but it still boot to Gnome first, there's also an "Alternate Install" cd separate from live cd which has only text based installer.

Nah...

This is supposed to be simple but it's giving me so much trouble.

I'll desist for now.
