Its also cheaper to do so, if you already have a copy of vista.
Yes you can, but it's still better to buy the real OS rather than an upgrade edition cuz upgrade means that's the only way you can get 7, in other words it ALWAYS has to be Vista first and then 7...which is just asking for unneccessary problems and annoyances. The propper OS version also allows an upgrade the one time you want to do that.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You can still do clean installs with upgrade versions.

Well perhaps through trickery or a mistake on MSs part...but you should not be able to...otherwise an Upgrade Version would be sold for the exact same as the real deal.

No, by design. You're making **** up according to how you think it should work according to it's description. The upgrade versions will install clean, it just briefly asks for your previous windows disc to verify that you own it. At least, XP did this, I haven't tried it since. It might not even ask you for that anymore.

If you're ever audited, you'd better be able to produce a valid vista license as well as the 7 upgrade license, but they almost never audit home users.

But then why are Upgrade versions so much cheaper? just for inconvenience of having to enter a previous licence and/or insert a previous disc?

Wouldn't really call them cheaper. They're about the same price as OEM licenses. But they're cheaper than retail, sure, because MS is giving you a deal since you already own the previous version. Many software companies do this.

So then seeing as I own retail Vista Home Premium there's nothing stopping me from getting 7 Home Premium Upgrade or perhaps even Professional Upgrade even if I want to do future clean installs?

Right. But, again, I would opt for the OEM license so I wouldn't have to keep track of 2 separate licenses. An OEM runs about 150-200 bucks.

Wit the OEM licence you don't get as much support though should you need it?

When do geeks like us ever need windows support?

Besides, the restriction behind OEM licensing is that it has to stay on the machine you buy it for, you can't transfer the license to another computer in the future. But, in reality, MS doesn't really care. I transfer OEMs all the time. Worst case scenario - you might have to do a phone activation after you transfer an OEM.

Vista required a previous os installed to upgrade.
Windows 7 has returne to the disk check iirc.....
however afaik, the overinstall trick still works.

This is the info I found:
Code:
Convert Win7 Ultimate to Pro or Home Premium
============================================
Here's the crux of the matter: If you put a DVD containing Win7 Ultimate in your PC
and run the installer — either by booting from the disc or running the setup program
from inside Windows — you end up with Win7 Ultimate. No surprises there.

However, if you first delete a tiny file named ei.cfg before making the installation
DVD, the Win7 installer will give you the following choices:
 Windows 7 Starter
 Windows 7 Home Basic
 Windows 7 Home Premium
 Windows 7 Professional
 Windows 7 Ultimate

Delete or rename \sources\ei.cfg before burning a Windows 7 installation DVD, and a
menu then allows you to select which version to install.

In fact, no matter which Win7 installation DVD you have — Ultimate, Pro, or Premium —
if you delete the ei.cfg file from the disc, you'll be offered the same choices and
can install any version of Windows 7.

That guide doesn't contain complete information.
You also need to extract the bootblock from the original DVD/Image and add it to the new project otherwise the new image/DVD will not be able to boot at startup.

you can use ultraiso to extract, and add the bootblock.

Considering that one downloaded the official .iso provided by MS or made a .iso-backup
from it's own legally obtained DVD, it would be sufficient to just rename or delete the file with WinISO (or any other ISO editing tool) inside the image itself.
Without fiddling around with any boot-blocks.

...and yes, you are right Squall... the above info wasn't complete.
I am so used to WinISO (for me it is like using WinRAR) that I simply forgot to mention it.
I'm regularly updating my Boot-DVDs which contain rescue tools and backup software.
With WinISO this simply is a breeze.
