There are a couple of ways to get Windows 7 very cheaply if you're a student at a university.
  • Check if your school is enrolled in MSDNAA. You can get it free through this.
  • Any student can get W7 for $29.99 just by having a .edu university email address through here. Please note that Microsoft may ask for proof of enrollment. If you are unable to provide this, they will have you pay the remainder.
  • Check with your school's IT services. They usually offer deeply discounted software if you prefer physical media.
A lot of students qualify for all three options and can get three unique licenses for less than the price of W7 retail.

Hmm... My (high)school has .edu email extensions. I wonder if I got my teacher to set me up an .edu email account would it work. I entered a few fake edu addresses and it accepted them all. I think any .edu address will work.

Yes, any .edu address will get you to the point of purchase. Just know that if you use an email address that is not from a U.S. college or university, you'll probably be more likely to be selected to provide proof of enrollment.

Microsoft or an appointed vendor may contact you to verify that you are a current student. If documentation is not provided indicating that you are a current student, you will be liable to reimburse Microsoft for the difference between what you paid and the estimated retail price of the software.

I'll give it a shot. How would they make you pay the rest, anyway?

They could blacklist the key I guess if you don't pay, but Microsoft tends to fail at common sense thinking like that usually.

Hehe, I know how you feel .

I preordered two copies of 7 Pro 64 bit OEM on Newegg earlier this week. The community college here isn't a MSDNAA member, and even if they were I'm not currently a student. I don't mind it too much though, the price for it is about the same as XP Pro OEM.

More inexpensive cigarettes from MS.

Buy Windows 7 for 35€, Just for French and German Students
Special offerings last until 2010

Quote:
Microsoft has lined up some pretty sweet deals with its latest iteration of the Windows client at the core, beating hands-down the special offerings it made available for Windows Vista, when it debuted in January 2007. The special discounts offered for students fall without a doubt in the “pretty sweet deals” category. In this regard, Microsoft is offering Windows 7 for as low as 35€ (Euros). Of course, access to the 35€ Windows 7 editions is limited; in fact, the special offering is only valid for students in France and Germany.

Microsoft has already introduced similar discounts, even before Windows 7 was generally available on the market. In mid-September 2009, the Redmond-based company debuted the Windows 7 UK Student Offer, which was designed to allow students in the United Kingdom to purchase either Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional for as low as £30. The offer continues to be available even now, and UK students with a valid email address can, of course, take advantage of it.

Almost immediately after news of the Windows 7 UK Student Offer started spreading, Microsoft officially confirmed that it had a similar offering for students in the US. A better deal actually, as the software giant is allowing US students to buy Windows 7 Home Premium for the low price of $29.99.

Via the “Windows 7 a 35 Euros pour les etudiants” French students can buy the Home Premium SKU for the discounted price. The offer will continue to be available until January 3, 2010. Similarly, German students can access the “Windows 7 Home Premium-Upgradeangebot fur Studenten” deal. The offer allows students in Germany with valid email addresses to buy an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for 35 Euros until February 28, 2009.

windows server 2008 R2 is actually the server version of Windows 7? Right? I got free access to windows server 2008 R2. If they are kinda similar I wouldn't bother purchasing Windows 7. (Like I never tried vista due to my free server 2008).

It is, basically, but I imagine running a server OS would be a PITA at times, with all the security crap it has.

Not to mention it doesn't have the Aero interface.

Doesn't using a server OS for a home desktop have certain draw-backs?

Edit: BigIg beat me to it xD

Windows Server looks alot like you're running the Windows XP Classic theme, which for 7 is "meh".

You suck The department concerned with MSDNAA should be listed on the page where all the schools/unis in your area are listed on the MS website. Just hop over to the concerned department office at your uni and demand free keys!
