Win 3.1 works fine, but Win95 depends on your ram. You must have at least 16MB, but even so it will run slowly. I saw at school a 486DX2 66, 16MB ram with Win95, and I can tell you that it's not worth. Just to start the computer it takes ages. However, if you have patience...

I have a DX2 66 and 16megs of ram and Windows 95 runs great. It's 98 that's slow. The minimum cpu speed forWindows 98 is 66mhz. Imagine trying to run Windows XP on a Pentium 233?? Minimum requirement.

What kind of programsa are you going to run on that machine.

My school has 486's as lab computers and they have 95 on them. Boy it takes FOREVER to boot up. And in one room they have Pentium 100s with 24 Mb of RAM running 98 and that is even slower! They are slower because they are actually connected with the school network and it has all the network stuff installed. The lab ones aren't connected with the network. That's just unbearable. Luckily, I'm not in the room with the P100s.

In 1995 I had win 95 loaded on a 486 sx 25 w/ 4 mb ram. Now that was a new definition of pain. In your case it will run fine... but be very picky about what software you chose to run on it. eg instaling IE 5 would slow it down considerably

My sister's computer is a 486 with 32 MB ram and a 2MB "video card" It can run Office 97 fine, but is slow in Photoshop 4 and can't play any multimedia other than audio ones.

I think Windows95 has no problem!

Win95 Specs:

Min: 486DX33 4MB
Main: 486DX2-66 8MB
Recommend: Pentium 90 8MB Sound Card

Good configuration.................

Win95 should be fine in 486s, although performance in Pentium-class processors is better because windows takes advantage of its pipeline feature, which means something like faster multitasking. Try to have a fast hard disk and at least 8 MB of RAM (16 MB if you're planning to install huge programs like MSOffice).

what's the matter guys??? I once worked as a computer instructor in an private school aimed for poor people (coz here the gov school sucks) and to start with, I was given 486SX @25Mhz with 4MB RAM (30 Pin SIMM) and they had Win98 running in it. it was slow, but not too slow as my old 386 in which I installed Win95 when it went out!!
