Differences indeed.

The most exciting part about windows is that no installation ends up the same way as the previous ones. it is magic

My temp folder is only 10 MBs in size. And I didn't know Windows would make backups of every update. Annoying, but I guess it's somewhat understandable. Will try and see what happens.

EDIT: 7.13 GBs in size. Well, I guess it's an improvement.

Service Pack 1 contains a binary called VSP1CLN.EXE, a tool that will make the Service Pack package permanent (not removable) on your system, and remove the RTM versions of all superseded components. This can only be done because by making the Service Pack permanent we can guarantee that we won’t ever need the RTM versions.
now known as compcln.exe in sp2

Mine weighs in at about 2,26 GB (own customised n-lited winxpsp3) counting in some possible additions in system32 by various progs and experiments, but those wouldn't make much difference

Although I can't confirm it at all, I've heard that Windows needs the backups of the update files to be able to uninstall them in the future if need be. Kinda useless, if you ask me.

I can only see that being useful if an upgrade was not an upgrade to begin with(eg. New features -> New security problems). Or having compatibility problems with an update, which honestly, is unheard of.
