Well I'm back home, not only is the 4870 folding now, but I also have an SMP CPU client running next to it. It doesn't seem to be using multicore fully since I can't get a 100% CPU usage on my Quad though. I wish they had a nice systray version of it as well.

Thats what I observed as well on the multicore clients I tried at work. The SMP CPU client doesn't show 100% usage in Task manager(on an 8core, I got 13%).

Yup, 25% here, maybe I did something wrong with the commandline parameters, but there's no nice GUI to check it in. I've never been a fan for these old DOS interfaces, as how I call them. It's from "before my time", if you get what I'm saying

Use the "-smp" and "-local" commandline switches. In the configuration for the SMP client, set it to always use advanced methods and set the WU size to "big" if you like.(big is purely optional, but results in enormous point gains) You will more than likely wind up downloading an "a1 core" which utilizes up to 4 cores per WU.

Other cores like "78" or "82" are not SMP cores, so you'll only see ~50% CPU utilization on a dual core or ~25% CPU utilization on a quad.

I used the -smp switch, but not the local one. I've always set it to use advanced methods as well as big.

Maybe I'll give it another go on a freed up blade tmw

Another thing worth nothing is that despite use of the SMP client you aren't guaranteed to wind up downloading an SMP core. Occasionally, I too wind up with a single core WU. Using advanced methods and "big" *almost* guarantees a multicore WU.

And oh yeah, the -local switch keeps multiple clients from getting their data mixed up between other clients. I always use it to prevent client "cross-talk".

Arg...I didn't know about the local switch. Now I gotta go into each instance and redo it. -.-" Not fun.

EDIT: on second thought, if I'm using the service console, does it still matter as there was no install? (other than the service install...this is where I'm not too certain)

That explains it Masta, I think I had it set correctly, so I suppose I was just unlucky this time. I also read that the "NANs detected on GPU" is a general thing that can happen to anyone. So well, tomorrow will be an interesting day for results

Whenever I need to make a change to the configuration, I usually wait for the current WU to finish and upload and then press Ctrl-C to close down the console. Then, I go to the FAH installation directory and delete the 'client.cfg' and edit my shortcuts as necessary. Upon restart of the console, you'll get the same Q&A stuff that was asked the first time the console was started.

Which core is your SMP client currently working on?

I currently have them running as services, so I can't actually start the console. If I do, I believe the core starts all over anyway (I think I read this somewhere), so I think I'll just end the processes.

I'll follow your steps though I really don't mind starting WUs from scratch, so thats not a problem for me. Just want to make sure everything is working properly

Project 4611 (run 5, clone 32, gen 97)

EDIT:

ARGH, nevermind, had to restart my PC, tried to restart the client, got some annoying messages about logging on and account. While it was at ~90% it's now gone and can't be retrieved. I'd say if Stanford really wants to crank up the productivity, they should make sure they make:
1. Their clients much more user friendly, a GUI would help
2. Stability, stability, stability.

They might not necessarily restart from scratch. On rare occasions they picked up where they left off even after changing the config.

Yeah, that's Amber Core (core82) and it's worth 2x the normal experimental points.

One problem I'm having is that when folding's running, if I open IE it often doesn't load a page, and I have to close and reopen the browser.

Also, when starting a game when folding's running, it appears to keep using resources most of the time.

Other than that, it does not have problems here. I do use the NV-specific client, but I also used the generic GPU one and they seem to be no different from each other, it seems to be that the NV one only has the nvidia viewer and as such is a smaller download.

I've given up on the SMP core, too many complications. It simply doesn't want to accept that I don't have a password on my administrator account. Followed the guide to the single letter, every single step, and it doesn't accept it. Their loss, even though it bloody frustrates me, especially since I just got a "NANs detected on GPU" once again at ~50% of the core. I've wasted probably ~15k points because of all this already and there's no clue about what's going on. I already downclocked my GPU to 720/500 to keep low temperatures and ensure stability but these messages (UNSTABLE_MACHINE) keep on coming at over 50% of the cores I get assigned to.

I'm kinda clueless what it can be, is it really my system? I know I'm not the only one getting this stuff, or do ATi and Stanford simply need to work on their drivers and programs? I really believe it's the latter, I never experience crashes in Windows and games, my GPU isn't a good overclocker but at stock speeds it does everything just fine. I suppose I'm just jinxed when it comes to PC hardware, seeing how all the gold I hold in my hands turns into ashes as soon as it enters my room. And since I really never want to give up on stuff like this, I already spent several days searching for answers on the internet. Such a waste of time.

Unfortunately, there is no way around this. You must have a password set on your account in order for it to work properly. I too prefer to not use a password, that way I can turn on my laptop and get a cup of coffee and when I get back, my desktop is loaded up and ready to go.

I'm sorry to hear that. The FAH clients are extremely sensitive to system abnormalities like voltage spikes, voltage drop-offs, and brown outs. This can be indicative that the voltage regulator circuits in your power supply or on your motherboard are on the verge of failing. It could also indicate that the power you are receiving from your local power company isn't being properly regulated.

There have been problems in the past where both ATI and nVidia had serious issues with FAH. Many of these issues have been fixed through driver updates and client-side updates to FAH itself.

With all the issues members seem to be having (though I can only blame my ignorance for mine), I don't know if we'll break into the top 8000 this week.
