The GPU client is the fastest available client by far and will net you the most PPD. (Both CAL and CUDA clients are faster than the PS3 client! )

The SMP client is experimental, but in my testing is very stable. It nets more PPD than the "standard" FAH client, but can't hold a candle to the GPU clients. If you have a triple or quadcore CPU, you can use the SMP client in conjunction with the GPU client. (reserve 2 cores for the SMP client(s) and one core to "assist" the GPU client)

I'd rather keep my CPU free for noise reasons, the Freezer 7Pro isn't exactly the quietest cooler out there and even with the GPU client it revs up to 1200RPM. My GPU cooler however, I can only applaud Sapphire for that

Let me update the starting post with the options for new folk.

EDIT:

Interesting, I tried underclocking my memory, just to keep the temperatures a bit lower, seems that when the memory is at half speed (400MHz / 1600 effectively) it takes roughly 16 seconds longer to add 1% (1.30min vs 1.47). I'm trying to find a nice balance here, couldn't find much info on it on the internet, but I do know that underclocking my core has a much higher effect on the calculations, and less an effect to power usage.

Join the blue side DD, it's not that hard a decision Time to see how far we can bump up this team!

It really pisses me off how instable the client is here. I have had so many WU's lost that were over half. I'm even afraid of a simple reboot before a WU is finished. Does any of you know the correct procedure for this? I'd assume just shutting it down will be enough for it to save its work, but my experiences tell me it's not that simple.

As for our current ranking:

You know, as a computational biologist and CUDA programmer myself I absolutely envy this guys at how mainstream they have made their application

That said, I guess those 5 CUDA computers at the lab could use some work during the night

I have a strong hunch that those 5 computers will be put to work downloading high quality anime rather then running folding@home.

That's why i said "high quality" 1080p anime. The Video cards will be ATI so the GPU will not offload thus the folding effort will be negated . All their juice is turned for Proto to wacth Lucky Star or Poni Poni Dash in high res

Yeah I know. When your not watching anime, you are toiling under the lash extracting narcotic peptides from Costa Rican flora

i'm against working for free, so i'm not going to contribute.
i also imagine this project takes alot of electricity/power, and will increase your energy bills

not to mention, that anything they do find might be sold or something (**** like that always happens), and anyone that does contribute will be some anonymous contributor, as apposed to the owners of the project.

You got me curious Threw two LS20 blades and one HS20 blade into folding for this team. Slightly antiquated by still good machines that really don't do much other than act as domain controllers and a virtualcentre

I may add a few more machines in the future (have some Power based blades as well )

That sounds like a contribution which dwarfs what most of us can offer Kudos D.D, I'll put a link to your personal profile in the first post as soon as I see it.

@cottonvibes: Just so you know, F@H is a university project from a consortium of various universities (Standford, Notre Dame, et al.) funded wth public money, and, to the best of my knowledge all of the results are publicly available, partly through the plethora of publications the group has written throughout the years.

About the anonymous contributor part... well, that's the whole philosophy of distributed computing and this type of clusters. If you just think of it that humanity was born for the sake of knowledge (and hence, research) it's not that bad of a deal

You don't have to be from Costa Rica. I'm pretty sure your from Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey

And if you ever dip your toe into natrual biology you will find tha Costa Rica has a hugely diverse ecosystem

Well, hopefully everything works out. Currently only two clients were successful in connecting to the work servers and the other one is failing. I'm thinking there may be some kind of a firewall issue here at IBM. I gotta see if theres something I can do about this, but I'll it run overnight by itself to see if it'll smooth out by itself or at least generate some more log entries for me to start looking.
