Best compressor

By your own experiences, which compressor is the more efficient with big files (~100mb)

ZIP ? RAR ? ACE ? Power Archive ? StuffIt ? TAR ? GZIP ? LZH ? LHA ? UPX ? RLE ?

Uharc is one of the best compression software out there, but it's command line oriented and doesn't use pretty GUI's.. Some people compressed over 1 gigabyte of data(graphics, sound, music) into a 64kbyte exe file.. Now that is compression..

I mostly use winRar for most of my compression but zip is widely used even though it doesn't compress as well as ace or rar..

fivefeet their must be some confusion here 1gigabyte of data ==>64kb only after compression ???

i agree with 5feet Uharc is the best when it comes to compression but i also dont use it often cause it is not very convenient to use now i stick with winace it compresses better than winzip but it is also slow, if you want speed winzip is the way to go

My friend once compressed 100 MB of data into a 200 KB ZIP file. It just contained repeated data all throughout though, but it sure fooled me.

Any rate, I think of all the standard compression algorithms the best one is RAR. It seems to compress better than ZIP or Ace. I use WinRAR for all my compression needs, it handles most other compression formats (zip, ace, tar, cab) so I don't really need anything else.

Of the 'big three', ace compresses the most.

But the format is altered almost every release, so compatibility is slow..

7zip (7z) is a nice up-and-coming compression as well.

Does anyone know if there are any file size limits for the built-in compression program in WinXP?

I still remember the old command line ARJ... it was the only and the best compressing I used with my 486.

I use STILL arj Especially at my school because the NT doesen't allow installing anything without "cheating"...

To compress:
ARJ a -e -v1440 pack *.*

To uncompress:
ARJ x -y *.arj *.a01 *.a02

What is -e and -y for? I always used the following:

compress: ARJ a -r -v1440 name_of_the_file
uncompress: ARJ x -v name_of_the_file

I believe RAR used a very similar command-line syntax to ARJ. RAR also had a GUI though.

I used ARJ a lot to save big files/programs on multiple floppies before I had a cd-burner.

Heh, PKZIP was the first compression program I ever used. I was trying to copy a file from school onto floppy but it was a bit too big. I found out about pkzip (can't remember how) and used it to compress the file and copy it onto disk. I thought it was the greatest thing at the time!

I think the DOS RAR program was really good. It seems to compress better than the Win32 version. A 5 MB file I was able to compress down to 800 KB (mostly uncompressed images) while with WinRAR it came down to 1 MB. Hmm, maybe it used maximum compression or something...
