Ubuntu linux 8.XXXX

Hi there!

i decided to post that because something funny happened yesterday... as everyone here knows am a big Linux hater eventhough i decided to install the new ubuntu build on one of my HDD and test it to see how much has linux changed since the last time i did that back in 1999 where i had bad experiences with this OS that causes my hate for it all those years.

to make this topic a bit shorter all i have to say is am deeply impressed with ubuntu and my point of view and hate about linux has changed drastically since yesterday.. so i think i could work in the future on some apps for that OS too.

i was testing QT4 which uses C++ and i have to say is damn good.. also drivers, applications etc. worked damn great which surpriced me alot.

so what are your experiences with with??? also a question for all those linux gurus here....... i noticed ePSXe and pSX executables doesn´t run when i open them...is there any thing that has to be done in order to make them work???

i know i sound like a n00b but is my first try after all those years of hate for linux.

Regards
@ruantec

Linux? Rapes windows for a lot of things even being Open source and free. Have you tried to pass the cursor on your mp3's? The desktop change is cool, isn't it? Defragmentation? Where? Moreover you have a TOTAL control on your system.

The only thing who made me keep the dual boot was games.

Wine and dualboot ;p

Once Wine is available, programs run with it should be turned available in the Wine startmenu item, for easy access (like for uTorrent)

A good practice is to keep a 'home' partition, rather than keeping the home folder a part of the root partition (this helps with migrations and sys upgrades)

Its possible to radically change the looks of Gnome to make it look like Windows XP or Vista, by the way ;p
See this site

Windows exe files don't work on linux, but the user interface is very customizable in ubuntu. It has a lot of eye candy. multiple desktops, Only problem with Linux now is the PC games can't be played on it. AFAIK The only game which runs on linux is doom3. plus the default small games which come with it are very cool.

If you download wine, you can use the win32 epsxe as long as you select a directX plugin (wine emulates windows), I played a bit of FF8 on it the other day.

I've had awful luck trying ubuntu.

First time I installed it, it worked for about three boots, but then one day it wouldn't boot and just threw me into a command line screen. Another time I tried it everything was fine for awhile, but I downloaded an update and it refused to boot again.

All in all, I think Linux is too much of a PITA for me. I've never had problems like that with Windows. (Maybe some people have... I haven't.)

ATI Catalyst Control Center doesn't work on Ubuntu when I last checked these forums But I just use the Live CD and the limited drivers that come with it. It's pretty good, does everything for you. I can run WiFi, LAN and some other stuff (which normally requires a lot of dialing in) just off the shelf without any hassles whatsoever (beats Windows hands down in this category).

Sometimes I just use my Knoppix live cd to play Galga. When I get a new Hard disk next year I will Install Knoppix on it.

Gotta love all them distros. I really think all these programmers should focus their efforts on ONE OS, rather then each and every one of them coming up with a small crappy OS of their own.

Talking Good luck!

IIRC, to run epsxe on ubuntu, you have to "unpack" the binary.
It uses some sort of UPX compression, which dont work so well with latest kernels...
Now how to do that?
Code:
sudo aptitude install upx-ucl-beta
sudo upx -d epsxe
More here:
Install ePSXe Playstation Emulator (Version 2) - Ubuntu Forums
How-To: install pSX on AMD64 - Ubuntu Forums
