Will probably still be 1GB. I get the impression that MS's goal with Windows 7 is efficiency.

Bill hasn't been calling the shots at Microsoft for a long time. Things were actually pretty good under Bill, I don't think he deserves half the crap people give him.

Ballmer is who we're stuck with now, and that guy is clueless.

Windows 7 is looking to decrease the requirements by optimising service and driver stack.

People are just transient, forgetting how things were in favour of pleasant ignorance in the present, hence all the wahwah over the OSes.

Vista Ultimate x64 is the best MS OS I've used Pre-"SP1" in years.
SP1 brought it plenty up to speed with SP3, for me, because of the extra features.
I mean...
I can actually let family members on my box because they can't fudge it or get it fudged by internet porn bunnies very easily now.

Win7 _currently_ is ontarget for an optimised Vista.
I'm all for that, but I'm sure they'll be doing more with it by the time it's out, minimalist or not.

Actually, no. Not based on the current discussion. Wait until people are talking about new features and then throw out your "that means more and more pc upgrades!" but don't use it when people talk about a more optimized OS/more optimized random-stuff, it just doesn't make sense. You kinda missed your cue, I think you were too early .

Nyway, as of now it's still early to judge W7, but I do hope they make it a good one, but can't say I trust them for now.

VRAM is dependant on resolution and color depth and has nothing to do with OS requirements themselves. Of course OSes have a minimum resolution, and maybe color depth, requirements that they support, but your video card doesn't need a certain amount of VRAM just to run the OS (I've seen 4MB and 8MB cards run Windows XP perfectly fine, which you listed as not even being enough for Windows 98, and Windows 95 even).

As for the CPU, I disagree. Windows 95/98 were closer to one another than the latter needing double of the former. You could use a 486 (and maybe 386, though it'd be slow) on Windows 95/98. You could use a Pentium II (and even a Pentium I) on Windows XP (a 486 lacked some necessary instructions). You can use a Pentium III on Windows Vista. Sure, these won't be fast, but that depends on what you're doing. For example, if you're using a Pentium II, you're likely not playing demanding games or watching high resolution videos anyway, so it'd be fine for use with Windows XP.

Just wanna point out that your listed spec are immensely beyond overkill for windows 95.

Back in 1996 my family had a $3000 (came loaded with a massive software suite) 75mhz pentium computer with 8mb ram system memory, and a 4mb Mach 64 graphics card videocard and it ran windows 95 quite fine. That wasn't a low end system either at the time we got it. It was capable of 1280x1024 at 256bit colour depth or up to 24 bit color depth at lower resolutions.

Ram was insanely expensive back then. ~$100 Canadian dollars for 8mbs of ram. So nobody would have that much memory.

One thing to note was, those first couple years windows 95 came out pretty much all games were played in dos with its tiny memory footprint and not windows.

WalMart sells machines like this. I invite anyone here to proclaim proudly that their computer does not even stand up to computers they sell at WalMart.

Well the dual-core bit might be exaggerated. Come on people, Vista can still run on a 800MHz VIA chip *goes to vomit outside window*

Vista can run on those hardwares... but how slow it'll be is another story altogether. You're better off not finding out, even.
