Either, depending on the situation.

I like WinRAR because I can just Right Click and extract the compressed file/s into it's own folder. Much more convenient.

7Zip, cause it's free and better compression.

Now it does ? I don't remember it having it...then again, I haven't used it for a long while. I'll try it later.

Why narrow the view by just Rar and 7zip.When I go to the page Maximum Compression (lossless data compression software) there're many apps that surpass 7zip and Rar if talking only about efficiency. If you talk about best compression,Peazip with its support LPAQ and PAQ8O can beat 7zip,rar easily and it's free.

WinRAR, because 7-zip has a bad icon.

By that reasoning you should be using Zip, since not only is it closer to being a standard than RAR is, but every modern OS has built-in ZIP support.

Standard in the sense of the format things come in that I download... Regardless, I just realized 7zip unpacks rars, so maybe I should make the switch. Too bad (as V1ncent noticed) the 7zip icon is so ugly.

7 zip is the first but i seems to be bad for those with single core since it takes lot of priority. I wish they will make it capable of running in low priority. I know when I compress on my single core pc and I cannot even browse the other hard disk.

time to get a duo core pc. XP.

7zip compresses better, but I don't like waiting ages for it to finish, so winrar gets my vote.

For me both lock up my PC for roughly the same amount of time.

WinRar, but there is a lot of better compression tools like Uharc with the GUI, and WinRK.

Edit: talking about compression..
before anybody flame me about piracy, I *BOUGHT THE GAME* from eBay, which is Thief deadly shadows, but also was amazed that I found RAR file just 180MB for the whole game, imagine that after unraring next to it un-uharc the files, then decompress mp3 to wave files then injecting them into one file. sh!t the work space for decompressing the game exceeded 9GB. although the final size was near 5-6GB.. (was compressed 200MB ) "Just the videos ripped but all the sounds were there".. that is truly ART..

Yes, the rip scene is known for that.

The scene lost much of its vibrancy nowdays, thanks to ISO groups and such.

7zip compress a little more and sometimes a lot more than winrar

but they´re both great programs, they should merge into one

the only thing missing from 7z is to compress multiple files, and every file in his own .7z file

It seems that WinZip really lost out big time to WinRAR. It was THE standard in file compression for a number of years, now WinRAR has taken over. Probably because of it's simplicity. WinZip used to be easy to understand for the average user. Then they changed the descriptions of the compression methods among other things, which was just stupid and turned me off to it (as well as others). I'm not a tech person, so I don't understand all of that tech gibberish. WinRAR has store, fastest, fast, normal, good, best which is pretty straight forward and easy to understand.

Winrar, I like the right click options instead of having to pop open the 7zip submenu. Compression? I usually just throw more hdd's at my problem.
