Wua.la Problems... and a nice idea!

Hey guys, ever heard about wua.la?
Quote:
Wuala, your free online hard-disk

Wuala is a new way of storing, sharing, and publishing files on the internet. It's a free desktop application for Windows, Mac, and Linux that brings you a convenient and secure online storage. Unlike traditional online storage systems, Wuala is decentralized and can harness idle resources of participating computers to build a large, secure, and reliable online storage. This new technology has a number of advantages and it allows us to provide you a better service for free.
Access, share and publish files

You can use Wuala to upload a file and access it from anywhere else, even when your computer is offline. Or you can use it to share files such as photos, videos, music, or documents with friends or groups. Furthermore, you can publish files for the whole world to see. In the public area, you can search and browse for what others have published. You can store any file you want in any size you want. Downloads are fast and there are no traffic limits.
Get as much storage as you like

You start with 1 GB provided by us. If you want more, you can simply trade some space on your hard disk for additional online storage. The idea behind Wuala is not to give you more storage in total (apart from the first GB provided by us), but to change the quality of your storage: It is able to transform local storage into online storage that can be accessed from anywhere and at any time, even when your computer is offline.
Security and privacy

Wuala is secure and protects your privacy: All files you store are encrypted such that only you and those authorized by you can access them. All encryption and decryption is performed locally and your password is never sent to us - so not even we can access your files.
Free, convenient desktop application

Wuala comes as a convenient desktop application for Windows, Mac, and Linux. After a quick download, Wuala is ready. It is integrated into your operating system so that you can conveniently drag and drop files, upload files in the background, open files in your favorite application, and stream media files directly.
It's a really great way to share your files with others and create some kind of network HDD, everyone can accees.
I still have some invitations, if someone likes to join, I can invite him.
Searching preferable for Vista64 users, because my Internet is always disconnecting after starting wua.la.
Could be a port problem, too, because I'm using it on my University ISP and it seems, that I can't use taht port. Is there a way to check which port I could use instead (btw: that was my problem, now to the idea
What do you think, we could create a NGEMU user group and host there all important files, emus etc.
Would be a good idea in my opinion! What do you think? It's better than having to check the website everytime and it's free traffic!

I'd prefer to recommend steering away from it as far as you can. This service could cause great harm to people lured into joining.
Also, "converting local storage into online storage" is nothing I've never witnessed even the scummiest of the anti-p2p corps say with a straight face.

Also, theyre using people hdd space and bandwidth without providing retribution. That would be the same as having ads served from your computers to the people viewing those ads. Plainly unacceptable. The p2p term was never supposed to just be a 'selling factor' (in the same way anything named after Ubuntu or Firefox is guaranteed instant success).
Here, your files are basically just spread across more than one point (this makes it difficult if not impossible to control the flow of these files, regardless of whether these are "encrypted" or not).

UlteOS and EyeOS are as good as ASP services get, for the moment being. Stay safe, and help people stay safe

Post over. Concerns published. Recommendations stuck. You may now boo me for slinging mud at that site (and all the concepts it dares to suggest as revolutionary improvements everyone would benefit from)

You don't need to provide HDD space, but you can get some additional space if you do so.
I don't do this and it works still good.

It was just an idea and I really like the idea of this service. We'll see, what others think about.

They would be expected to be positive about the thought. I do not believe many if any will look much further than at the featurelist.
The loss of control of your own information is also just too much of a risk, especially since it does not alleviate much the prior concern about "loss of control" of files posted on the internet.

i agree with HCR on this one.

if you want to share your files, than just upload them to some hosting site like megaupload.

Yeah, but it's a easier way than before, like an FTP, with direct file system integration.
IMO it's a great service and will look how it will turn out in future.

HFS HTTP File Server is as easy as it gets, for short-term file sharing. Setting an oned server would be the safest. Other than that, anything thrown at the internet is outta control anyway, unless encrypted or password-protected
