Windows Xp Professional x64

Windows XP Professional x64 has the WoW 64 (Windows on Windows 64) system that allows you to run 32-bit programms.

Some people say that Windows XP x64 can't run some of the 32-bit programms, but then what about WoW 64 ?

My question is:
Why are people affraid to change to x64?
I want to do it to increase my max RAM ammount to 4 gb (I have Win XP pro SP2).

What's the prob, if x64 runs fine with the 32-bit applications? Am I getting something wrong? And how is this concerning pcsx2?

there isnt any problems with running 32bit programs on XP 64. WoW64 auto kicks in for 32bit programs. the usual "gripe" is drivers, they are even to this day a pain sometimes, althought things are much better than they use to be.

Also PCSX2 runs fine (both versions)

like ref said,
running apps isn't the problem, its drivers (usually)

i use a gamepad driver that they only have a 32bit version of.

so gamming on a 64bit OS, i can't use my gamepad... so it sux0rs :/

drivers = hardware abstration layer
apps = application layer.

it works on an application layer level

It's also poorly written programs. Some programs look at the Operating System string, and if it's not the same thing that they're looking for, they refuse to run. Of course, they don't bother checking for the XP 64 string, so you get software that won't run (only because XP 64 is identified as XP 64). I don't see this very often in games (in fact, the last game that did this was way back in the 98/XP transition days), but commercial applications do this. Generally, if the quality control department sucks, you end up with sucky software - it's that simple.

XP64 actually likes to identify itself as Windows Server 2003, since it's that OS with the server stuff stripped out. XP64 even uses 2003's updates and service packs.

I like XP64 a lot. I do have a couple of devices I can't seem to get drivers for, a webcam and an infrared port on my laptop, but otherwise I've found drivers for everything. It is a bit of a hunt, as XP64 drivers don't tend to be conveniently located. I ended up using drivers meant for other laptops for some of my stuff.

While I see XP64 surviving for a long time (as long as Server 2003) I am not going to use it in the future. I already converted one laptop over to Vista x64, and one has been delegated the "Hackintosh test bed", so the only thing I have XP64 on currently is my gaming desktop. I am thinking of upgrading it, and it will probably get Vista as well.

Honestly speaking, x64 is quite stable and the support is there. I've encountered no problems using XP x64 and it ran flawless (whether x86 or x64 apps).

The only headache of an O/S, that's x64,is Vista. It's stable and runs on the same premise as XP x64 but it's M$'s infuriating "Driver Signing" that's a massive pain in the Buttootoo.

Anyone who's on XP MCE/SP2 x86, i'd recommend switching to x64...if you can.

Although, before doing so, investigate and research into the drivers for all your hardware and software you ususally use...if it all checks out, go for it.

Note: Some software says it doesn't necessarily support x64, but works fine anyway.

WoW64 can't run all x32 apps, there are a few out there which won't run.

the big issue is XP64 cannot run 16bit apps, so alot of your old ntvdm apps are gone. (use dosbox)

I've had a few games that refused to install because it kept complaining it wasn't compatible with my version of Windows even though the game ran perfectly fine once installed.

To remedy this problem, I had to make an image of my disc, download orca, manually edit the msi file, replace the msi file on the image with the edited one using MagicISO, mount with Daemon Tools and install.

Quite a workaround just to install a game that refuses to install when it actually works fine once you are able to get it installed.

Other than some small hitches I haven't had any problems running applications on either the 64-bit XP Pro or Vista 64-bit.
