The very best all-round solution for all aspects of security:

Kaspersky Security Suite. Don't bother at all looking elsewhere or hoping for anything remotedly as capable and usable by home users.

And before anyone dares suggest the Eset security suite, it plainly sucks when compared to Kaspersky (especially the firewall and web protection, too confusing for the average user as well).

There. Thread truly over.

PS: Norton's security suite majorly sucks, by the way, but I suppose this was a known enough fact ;p

Kaspersky AV should suffice, though the complementarity of K's firewall is advised.

There is always Avast in the free range, I suppose...

I never had issues with the business edition of ESET Smart Security...Serves me well so far...

Plus, resource usage is quite low, with no messing up processes taking CPU.

Funnily, the eset AV and suite's windows service randomly drinks all the cpu timing (over 90%, in more than one comp, with different environments. single cores, notably.), locking the workstation till it's killed. 2.7 was very nice as an AV, but the service horribly negates the low ressource usage it was known for in the past. I can't speak for corporate editions, but as is the case with Norton's offering, I suppose it would indeed be less troublesome

I second what HCR said. Kaspersky Internet Security will keep you covered from just about anything.

If you want to be ultra cautious download the free version of AdAware and run it every month or so. That'll get rid of whatever might have slipped past Kaspersky (which is usually nothing).

Somehow I feel online security REALLY deserves a separate thread from the 'nice software' one, since this is no trivial topic, and requires serious discussing

Spybot Search and destroy (removes threats)
spyware terminator (removes and prevents threats)
spyware doctor starter pack (free if you download it from the google pack)
Windows defender (prevention and removal)

will list better ones later, but this should suffice already

yes. it just has less realtime protection than the full version, which is finely appropriate enough.

Kaspersky just is the very best at this (especially the whole security suite).

Does Kaspersky have a firewall too?
I'm just using Spybot atm for searching every once in a while.
