is there a way for college students to get office cheap?

i remember reading in a thread long ago that said college students could get MS office 2007 Ultimate (or whatever, the best one) for like $60.

now that i've been accepted somewhere, i'd like to hit up MS on that offer, if it is still around...

i'm still finishing High School, so even though i've been accepted, i'm not actually enrolled!

is this something they do every year? cus it'd be easier for me to get this now then wait till the end of my freshman year IMO

You must hold a valid email address at a U.S. educational institution ending in .edu (for example, leina@contoso.university.edu)

AND

Be actively enrolled with at least 0.5 course load.

...so am i reading this wrong? cus it just seems weird that they wouldn't make this available to students going INTO their first year of college

edit: ignore the link too, stupid thing from the copy + paste from the website

I was actually going to say that before I saw that you posted it. When I was taking English courses, my professor said that if we can't get ahold of Microsoft Office, we could use OpenOffice as a free alternative.

You can go all anti-Microsoft, but suffice to say, it is the standard in the business world. If for compatibility reasons only, it's worth using.

OpenOffice is good enough though at least as a temporary solution. It's basic, but does it's job as it should.

My dad is a state employee, so he can get Office 2007 Ultimate for $20 (I think) through a similar offer.

I've also know of a very similar offer being used through Autodesk.

It's how I got AutoCAD 2008 for free -- simply because I have a university e-mail (Granted, I get a 14 month no-restrictions license that can be renewed)

That's a hell of a bargain -- paying $0 for a ~$5000 piece of software -- that's legal no less.

Anyway, if you can't get Office for your discount, get OpenOffice; it's just as good in most cases...and its that much money that Micro$oft doesnt get.

Oenoffice is as good as MS office if not better, and later this year openoffice 3.0 will have support for MS office 2007 file formats. If you need to open office 2007 files before 3.0 is release, their is a plugin that lets you do that.
