Need help recording myself playing an emulator

I wanted to record myself playing an emulator but when I tried using the program called Camtasia Studio, it took a serious toll on my memory and my project 64 performance went downhill cuasing me record playing at very low FPS whats a good program to use that wont hog up ram of 512mb. I tried using Fraps but had no clue what I was doing. If anyone could help me how to use that as well it would be greatly appreciated.

what do you mean? press the hotkey and voila... the video will be saved in the fraps folder.

You can use Snag It, like I've suggested on some other thread

I figured that I tried on all my pcs (which each hold around 512mb of ram space) and it went slow whenver I wanted to go full screen. How much ram do you think I would need to run some recording?

What are your GPU and CPU?
You might need least 1 GB for most of the programs nowadays.
2GB is like the standard.

Yeah it kinda depends on the rest of your PC...afterall RAM is not the only factor in performance.

It's more CPU and HDD intensive.

I got an AMD Anthalon 2800 with 2.8 GHZ processor for my primary pc. . I recorded PJ64 on the lowest resolution which seemed to run at the standard FPS but when the recording came out, the video was very pixilated and the overall grfx were worse than when I was playing.

Is there any way with a program like Snag It where I can directly record within the running program (Project 64) instead of selecting a specific area within my desktop?

Got an idea for you, while recording with whatever program, set your desktop to 16 bit, that should speed things up a little, on the recording there won't really be much difference in quality if you're going to be posting your videos on youtube or whatever. Windows media encoder has a feature where you can record only the specific window or area of screen. If you need help recording sound try finding the options in your sound devices for 'stereo mix' or similar, usually under sound in control panel.

I'll be honest when I say don't waste time with anything other than FRAPS. What issue are you having with it?

The real frequency isnt 2.8 GHZ its either 2133 if you have athlon barthon either 1800 if you have the 64 bits model either way from the processor point of view fraps should be able to work (it worked on an P3 1000 Mhz overcloked at 1333 Mhz with ePSXe Pete D3D plugin at 640X480) what HDD do you have also if your HDD is to busy that could also be a problem also specify your videoboard

Don't forget to encode them - those files are crazy big.

Ah Yes you beat me to my next question! Now personally I was recording a two miniute vid of Super Mario 64 and it came out to be 675 MB!!! I really dont have a huge HD and if I even try to record 5 min worth of PJ64 vid I would most likely run out of space. So would I have to record these vids in seperate cuts and also what should I use to encode the videos in?

You need to encode them to .avi or something.

The file you have is uncompressed.
