This is what I don't understand as well. I have a Pentium-D 2.8ghz, 1.5gb of RAM and a GeForce 8600GTS, not exactly a high end system and I just don't get why people who have better systems than I do have so many problems with Vista. The only software I needed a new version of was Nero and the only hardware that needed a new driver was my Lexmark All in One. Gaming is also very good, if there is any difference I certainly haven't noticed it and in the case of some older games Vista runs them better than XP, even with the dual-core hotfix installed.

Yes you can turn all of the graphical frippery off if you want to.

One thing that was a major pizzor for me is the same thing as you, the Lexmark drivers. I don't blame Vista for that though, I blame Lexmark's lazy asses who didn't want to create a Vista compatible driver for my printer.

Luckily my father was able to get a new printer so he gave me his old HP printer/scanner so all is not lost.

Generally my experience with Vista has been quite pleasant so far besides a few minor annoyances.

UAC is a small annoyance, but it's not so annoying that it leads me to disabling it.

For some emulators/games to work properly I had to give permissions for Vista to write to the emulators/games folder in the C:\Program Files directory.

Right now I'm only using the 32-bit Vista, I plan on picking up the 64-bit version soon when I get some more money.

Right now I currently dual boot XP64 and Vista 32-bit, only reason I have XP64 right now is to test games via Dolphin 64 Beta 3.

However once I'm able to purchase Vista64 I'll be ditching XP altogether.

XP all the way, been using it for 5 (?) years now. Also tried Vista, but it simply doesn't run that smoothly and uses up a lot of memory, which I don't like. And now with SP3, I'll sure stick with it until Win 7.
