Question HD swapping

Hi Everyone, i recently sold my old dell d410 to a coworker but i took my 100gb with XP Pro. I remember their is a way to swap my hard drive into other laptop that is ata. I remember i had to replace certain files in the windows or windows32 directory. After that the hard drive would boot up and all i would have to do is install drivers for the new laptop. If you guy now how to do this plz, any info toward this is very much appreciated

old system was Via = Repair install windows if you no longer have the system, or if you do, uninstall every via driver from device manager without a reboot, then shut down and swap the hardware.

Old system was nforce - uninstall the nforce drivers from add/remove programs and make the swap.

Old system was intel, - just make the swap, intel relies on standard msft drivers and just uses infs to name the various devices.

just make the swap, you can remove the no longer present devices using the SHOW_NON_PRESENT_DEVICES trick.

Quote:
open up a cmd prompt and cd to c:\windows\system32
b. type: set show_non_present_devices=1 (then press enter)
c. type: start devmgmt.msc (press enter -this will open up device manager)
d. In device manager, go to the view menu and choose "Show hidden devices"
e. remove the device (right click, uninstall)
i recommend refraining against removing devices from non plug and play, and sound and audio devices.
