I suppose this 10% is from multi-core optimisations?

So I might aswell stay on SP2?

The supposed 10% boost has been reduced to zero... thanks to security fixes. SP2 with dual-core hotfix or previous SP3 betas are way better IMO. This won't have any impact on performance on a single-core system. At all.

Gee... makes me reinstall XP on my Eee...

Slipstream SP3. A vanilla install with SP3 prefitted in will give the best performance

Will try that out once I have set up my Eee PC. Now where's that VGA driver?

Better yet, I'll just wait until tomorrow, and post results with PCSX2 on the E7200 along with the SP3 results. ;p As it is, I bet a lot of us are interested in that, anyway.

the 10% performance increases are still there as long as you are using default service settings.

i think the 10% performance increase isn't very accurate.

how can you test that?

i doubt it will make something like PCSX2 or Crysis run 10% faster...

i believe the way the performance was tested was using Microsoft Office programs....

i will wait a while to see if anyone releases any accurate benchmarks...

SP3 manages memory slightly more efficiently, so any program, I imagine would benefit from around that much

I don't know about the rest of the world but after installing SP3 the system feels generally faster and more stable. There was also a major speed boost during the startup process (using a slow 4200rpm disk with tiny cache) and some annoying Windows bugs I encountered seem to be finally gone.

i need to repair install i think, i've been messing with my network stuff and managed to bork the Packet scheduler,... good thing its not needed, heh.

Just a note, Vista users with crappy network performance or drop outs should remove the QoS Packet Scheduler from network properties.

There's an ETH0 SP3 slipstream disc floating around on most torrent networks right now.

It's 100% legal to download licensed MS software, before anyone gets their panties in a bunch. You just need a license for any copies you actually install.

ETH0, is a warez release group.

Which means, by your logic, I could download any software, I have a license for that is released by a warez release group, like BioShock or w.e... Or even ETH0's WGA patch.

Regardless of the logic you invoke, its still not okay to condone or openly encourage swapping of warez.

It's not warez. Don't believe me? Call up microsoft and ask them if they mind you downloading it. I have before. They don't care if the software gets distributed. They don't even care if you keep your windows disc. The license is all that matters.

With MS, yes. The licence is tied to persons in particular, if obtained through a digital store or OEM. This is not about Microsoft though (even truer if you do register with them). The benefit they get from all the 'freeloaders' installed base more than compensates for any possible "losses" they might claim to incur (warez office swappers aren't likely to buy it anyway, but this enforces a monoculture. Hence why mentioning Microsoft in particular is a not a proper example)).

Encouraging swapping of warez still is not something cool (in the same way suggesting that people should violate laws just because theyre illogic would not be a defense). Thank you for sharing your views on the topic netherless.

Not everyone operates on the same licensing model MS does. I'm telling you, though, that in terms of windows distributions, swapping slipstreamed disc images is completely ok. I sold this stuff for years, I'm more than familiar with MS's licensing.

It's not like games. Microsoft doesn't sell software, believe it or not. They only sell licenses to use their software. Their discs are essentially worthless and they don't care if people copy or download them. If you don't believe me call microsoft and tell them you lost your disc but you still have your license sticker. They'll send you a replacement disc for $30. Then ask if you can just copy a friend's disc. They'll tell you to go ahead.
