Future of Vmware?

Does anyone know if they ar eworking ona something similar to Vmware fusion but for Windows and not MAC?. I love vmware but my only gripe is that it emulates a really basic video card. not that I am trying to game in a Virtual machine, but it would be nice to be able to watch dvd's or Divx with good quality.

I don't know but I'd say he probably already knows that.

The 3d acceleration is extremely basic and does not support pixel shaders meaning that you won't be able to play any game through Vmware that requires Pixel Shader capable hardware. I think the video card that is emulated is an ancient SiS card or something of the sort.

I thought they were working out a way that you could use your actual video card/hardware rather than an emulated one and just emulate the guest operating system.

If VMware used the real hardware rather than emulated, it would be the answer to gaming on Linux without having to install Windows as your os or in a dual boot.

Just install Windows as a guest OS on your Linux box, install favorite games and play away. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

It was basically just a rant.

Although I sure hope so someday, that emulated video card just isn't cutting it and makes demanding guest OS's laggy as hell.

I just want to someday be able to throw Windows out as a main operating system and run it via Vmware on my Linux box where I can install and play games on.

I would of thought they would ditch that emulated video card and write some kind of access layer to access and use your PC's real video card instead of an emulated one.

But they haven't yet, nor is there a recent announcement of them doing so either.

Is there not a demand for this?

its stupid and pointless, running an operating system via a virtual machine will always result in a heavy hit... your best off just dual booting.

No, not really.

Virtualization software makers are targetting the *paying* customer. These are the companies consolidating servers, which don't do 3D graphics or sound, and just need reliability and server performance. MegaCorp wanting to buy 1000 licenses for a project is going to get more attention than the guy downloading the free version that wants to watch DVDs in a virtual OS.

Besides, every platform VMWare stuff runs on can probably play DVDs natively. Why would you want to watch it in a guest?
