OS help

im still makin decisions about makin a computer, and i need some help. Should i get XP or vista? I heard vista is a pain, but dont some games require vista? i dont want to miss out on better perks b/c of pcsx2. Does the emu run better on vista? or is vista a big mistake? i like the way vista looks, but does it offer anythin more that XP doesnt have?

ok lets see... where to start...

Dx 10 is At the moment not compatible with Xp But it will be soon =P
ive never Heard of a pcsx2 fps with a amd 6400... i didnt even know they went higher than 5800, so you might be in luck there ^^
Ram doesnt usually matter as long as you got more than 1.5gbs i think your Ok, But with Vista i recomend 2gb's

As far as other games go It depends on your Graphics card... What do you currently have.. And btw Most all Games still have Dx 9 Support... Like crysis and bioshock and Cod4 all that and you will get better fps with Dx9 But better graphics obviously with Dx10

Well since you dont have it Stay Yet Stay away from AMD... I used to be a Amd Fanboy myself until i got the Intel Core 2 duo and let me tell you its Way faster....

As for the 64bit OS usually Only developers and Debuggers use it =/... Thats just my
opinion

Your processor will be x32 bit But will Maybe support x64 bit

No games require vista except those made by Microsoft, since they are trying to force people to upgrade to the new OS. THese include Halo2 and Shadowrun. Infact we have yet to see a huge just in visuals going to Vista.

Crysis was supposed to be the flagship title that showed the difference between XP and vista(dx9 and dx10), but by using xp and simply editting a couple settings in some config files you can get it looking even better than default max settings in vista.

All modern core2 processors support 64bit applications and OS.

As I said dx10 as of yet adds pretty much nothing to games, which means vista adds pretty much nothing to games besides eating more of your ram and leaving less for the game.

If your an oldschool gamer like me vista is going to break lots of those old games.

Vista has lots of nice features though, like the quicksearch bar in the startmenu, the added security measures and the desktop rss feed.

I think you're a bit misinformed...unless I'm just misunderstanding your words. Microsoft has no plans to implement DX10 in XP. Yes I know there are some people who are attempting to bring it to XP, but something like a new DX...I'd just go buy Vista. Also, the latest SP for XP just makes it all the better for gaming then Vista does.

Alky project is dead.

Oh, and calling their code alpha is being generous. Even if they didn't go under, by the time of release there would be zero reason to run XP over Vista then. You're seriously looking at least 2-3 years before a stable compatible release from the code.

i have another question. two dual core processors.
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E8400 CPU @ 3.00GHz 1333FSB 6MB L2 Cache 64-bit
and
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6850 CPU @ 3.00GHz 1333FSB 4MB L2 Cache 64-bit
whats the difference and why does the second one cost ~$100 more?
also, bmrenya, i heard that AMD is better for gaming. Not true?

1) The E8400 is a penryn. If you have a motherboard that supports it, it's a lot better than the E6850. The E6850 costs more because it was the top of the old "mainstream" dual cores. Basically, it's quite idiotic getting it now. It's surpassed.

2) No amd can compete nowadays with the mid-high end intel CPUs. Amd wasn't bad before. As of now it can't compare...

penryn is the name given to intels latest revision of the core2 chip. Its smaller, faster, cooler, more efficient and overclocks better than the intel core2's of last year and 2006 which where called conroes. They shrunk its transistors from 65nm down to 45nm.

yes, but even some that don''t will with a bios update.

But bios updates require you to have non-penryn intel chip beforehand to install the bios update.

do you currently have at least a p4 system?

You're behind the times. The project is pretty much dead.

Well, it depends too PCXL. I know that the latest update for the 975 chipset enables those boards to run the Wolfdales no problem, but the Yorkfields are still screwy on them. To be sure though, I'd do some research on other boards and visit the manufacturers website to see if your target board is supported.
