Is a Bios needed for Gamecube emulation?

Is a Bios needed? If so how can I go about dumping it?

Also to back up my games a copy of Phantasy Star Online is needed as well as a Broadband Adapter for Gamecube.

Does anyone have a direct link to the copy of Phantasy Star Online that I need at an online retail store such as Amazon.com/ebay?

Thanks if anyone can let me know.

u don't need a bios,

for Phantasy Star online i found it on amazon.com

Amazon.com: Sega Phantasy Star Online 1 & 2 GC ( 61021 ): Video Games
Amazon.com: Phantasy Star 1 & 2 Plus: Video Games

USB gecko can dump GC DVDs and its much cheaper and can do more than a network adapter

Thank You, the reason I asked about Phantasy Star Online is because I heard that an updated version was released that patched the exploit allowing Gamecube games to be dumped.

What is a USB Gekko? Does it still require Phantasy Star Online to dump Gamecube games with it? What can you do with it exactly that can't be done with a normal broadband adapter?

Additionally I heard theres two programs out there that can dump Gamecube games, Rawdump and Friidump but require a certain LG DVD drive. What is wiser investing in the adapter plus game to dump Gamecube games or purchasing an LG DVD drive to dump them with these apps?

just buy the USB gecko, its an memorycard that can do everything a homebrew developer need on the gamecube.

visit the homepage: USB Gecko - Connect your PC to your Wii via USB 2 for rapid homebrew development!

eek, their only stores are in Spain, Australia and Germany that sell this. I live in the USA, probably would be a fortune to buy and have this shipped.

Also if I buy this, is Phantasy Star Online still required to dump my Gamecube games?

there are 4 methods to dump games

- Phantasy Star Online exploit
- LG Drive and RAW/Friidump
- DVD-to-SD dumper (requires SD Gecko)
- and USB Gecko

you don't need PSO to use the other 3 methods

the fastest/most usefull method is USB Gecko, the easiest is the LG Drive

USB Gecko - Adictronsays, they sell worldwide

Thanks, what I meant is that the price is in Euros.

Since I am in the USA, using a currency converter to convert Euros into USD the price goes up from 29.99 Euros to nearly $45 USD which is nearly $15 more not factoring in expensive overseas shipping, unless what you are saying is that they have a business in the USA as well so I won't be charged expensive overseas shipping fees and/or tax.

Has anyone bought the USB Gecko? I'm thinking in getting one and wondering how long it takes to get one shipped from there. Remote debugging seems interesting

Bought my USB Gecko from here (Adictron)

Adictron is the official reseller. Seems that it is cheaper there.

I'm happy. Worldwide shipping in 2 weeks and it is great.

Since the moment ripped Wii games, grabbed screens, booted games, etc. All worked fine!

Jus a note for people who doesn't know: To play USB Gecko you need a modified console (modchip) or an Action Replay + SD Gecko method.
If you own an old AR not working with Wii firmware updates, contact Datel and they will send you the new Acton Replay working with Gecko products and firmware updates

so it does need a modchip... thanks for clearing that up
I wouldnt mind spending a few bucks to get this but a modchip on top of that just seems like a waste of money... I never touch my cube but was mostly interested in the remote debugger...

You don't require a modchip. You can use a Softmod such as Action Replay + SD Gecko. No need to open your console or install a modchip

So your saying we need two things just for dumping Gamecube games, both the USB Gecko and an Action Replay?

I would of thought the USB Gecko would of shipped with the required software to dump games or debug without the need of a modchip or Action Replay.

What I received is a box with:

PC software disc + USB cable + USB Gecko adapter for GameCube/Wii

As they say, required is a way to run homebrew code. So yes, you need a way to run sdload as any modchip or other not-modchip methods as SDML or Action Replay + SD Gecko.

I use Action Replay before to know about SD Gecko or USB Gecko. Action Replay is the best cheat system available + a freeloader to play imported games so it is pretty worth. If you read what appears in official site about USB Gecko, seems that it is more a development tool than a modchip.

Will USB Gecko always need Action Replay or a modchip or whatever? I don't think so... Time will tell us. These days, Wii scene is improving quickly

Whats the final word, can Gamecube games be extracted via a Gamecube and USB Gecko without the need for an Action Replay?

Or is the Action Replay a must to rip Gamecube games with a Gamecube and USB Gecko?

I had to have a friend with the proper tools rip my copies of Resident Evil 0 and Remake, then save them to my external drive until I can get my hands on a USB Gecko.

Thanks if anyone can let me know.

Didn't you read about Zelda's Wii exploit? Now you don't even need a modchip or even a Softmod (Action Replay). You just save the exploit in a SD card as a Zelda save, start the game and when you speak with a guy, the exploit is loaded seeking an USB Gecko.

sorry to "revive" this thread but it looks like the right place to ask.
what difference would make in a gamecube emu if it used the bios?
for the sake of full emulation, i assume it will have to use it someday... or the bios functions are also emulated and not taken directly from the source?
thanks a lot!

Mostly because the BIOS is loaded within/by games, that's why you don't need the GC BIOS.

i see. but from the current state of GC emulators, they seem to be software to run gamecube games (not an insult, let me explain), and not full emulators.

maybe i´m affected by the way pSX works, emulating the whole console, but it feels like dolphin (just an example) won´t be complete if it doesn´t show Gamecube´s intro, settings and memory card manager, etc. Or am i wrong or missing something?
