Questions About Overclocking

Hey, I have some questions about overclocking, seeing as I'm completely new to it. First off, what kind of things do I need to overclock? I've read that you need to have a high amount of cooling, or your hardware could be damaged, but how much, depending on how much you want to overclock. Second, How much can I overclock without damaging my hardware, based on my cooling system. Third, how do I overclock? Does my motherboard have a build-in overclock program? Is there another way if it doesn't?

And now a complete run-down of my Computer.

AMD Athlon XP Pro3+ 1.79 GHz (Being why I want to overclock, at least until I upgrade)
1 Gig of RAM
Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT
450W Power Supply (I think, hard to tell without opening the computer)
M811LU (V3.1) Motherboard
I guess I should also say that I have an extra side fan.

If there's any other info you need, or I wasn't clear just say so and I'll add it in this post.

EDIT1: Here's a picture from CPU-z on my system

The best thing to start with is by downloading an application called Speedfan (google it), it's used to keep an eye on your temperatures. You might need to invest in a new cooler for your CPU if you have the default one.

Also helpful for other members who are more experienced with overclocking your family of CPUs, is the information CPU-z (google it ) gives on the first tab, such as the CPU family, steppings and whatever else. A screenshot usually does wonders.

Another important thing is RAM. If your memory is already running as fast as it can, it will probably hold back your CPU from being overclocked decently, because if RAM is pushed too far, your system will simply lock up.

That's just some basic things, I'm sure if you can provide the info, others can help you further

Hello,
If I'm not mistaking, your motherboard is PC Chip's M811LU, which is a budget board that doesn't have all the features necessary for overclocking. I don't remember if it even allows you to adjust the FSB. You might be able to get a couple hundred Mhz with Clockgen, but that's most likely as far as you can go.

Really that's all I'm going for, is a couple hundred Mhz. So how do you use ClockGen, I'm a little confused.
