Overlord PC Demo

So I saw this article at tweakers.net, a dutch computer/tech related webpage, where they had this preview on Overlord, a game developed by a Dutch company, who were also responsible for Age of Wonders. There's a demo available of this game for the PC version, after having seen a demo for X360.

I decided to give it a go mainly because the preview said it offered some nice gameplay which you don't see everyday, and that the humour offered was nothing short of hilarious. It is said to be a bit like Dungeon Keeper, combined with a couple of other games.

I made plenty of screenshots, unfortunately either the demo or ATi Tray Tools didn't allow of any ingame demo shots to be made, or you could've laughed at some of the funny ingame stuff.

In this game you play the evil guy, who is going on a trip of destruction against those who killed you a long time ago. These 7 heroes all have fallen to one of the 7 sins, at least that's what I picked up from that preview. As the Overlord, you have imps as minions to control. You summon them from spawn points and direct them to do evil and funny stuff. Alternatively, you also have a large piece of steel to smack around with. There's nothing better than kicking around your court jester and hear him say "hail master" right before he gets the taste of your iron boots

Yes in that respect this game is a lot like Dungeon Keeper, and it throws some winks at it as well. With your tower having a heart and all of that. It's pretty lighthearted evil, and I haven't seen any blood in it. But personally I cannot wait for the full version. I don't think I'll buy it instantly, but I will definitely pick it up sooner or later. The controls are a bit iffy, clearly this is a 360 port, which is mainly noticeable because of the camera, which behaves like your average Sonic Adventure cam Don't worry, you'll grow used to it. The game plays fine with your average dual shock controller btw.

The graphics are nice, there's some excessive bloom in it, but imo here it adds to the fantasy setting, rather than trying to make it seem convincing. These horrible do-goody lands with sheep in it really look nice, and way too cute, and the bloom does a nice job. Thank the overlord you can destroy stuff and kill these fluffy creatures. The game didn't run that bad, kinda like your average X360 port. So perhaps it DID run bad. Performance is kinda like Test Drive Unlimited in terms of framerate. Seeing how I can run it with max settings, but 4xAA causes too much of a penalty. So some people might find it a bit too taxing, and I think it should run smoother as well. But it's a port, and those aren't known for being optimized.

Anyway, I can really recommend checking out this game because it looks nice, plays really well, and it's simply a lot of fun.

You mean that the print screen key does not work? Weird...
I heard about the game but haven't been interested because of his native "country" (the 360). What is the gameplay like? (RTS/'Beat them all' mix?)

Is it obvious that is it cinematics screenshots. So I don't think you can even talk about graphics quality.

You control your overlord from a third person perspective. You can run around and your minions will follow you. Meanwhile you can tell them to move out forward and they'll do whatever you pointed them at.

Direct them at an enemy, they'll attack. Direct them at a log that's on the way, they'll move it. Direct them at a house, they'll plunder it.

With the right analog stick you can direct the horde in a different way, to maneuver them through areas you cannot send them directly.

You don't stand around idly, though that's the safest thing. You'll also get spell, like a fireball to set fields of wheat on fire. This will take care of hiding creatures, and seeing them burn will certainly bring a smile to your face

Anyway, I don't think I've ever played a game that's like this before, so it's kinda hard to explain the entire system. Right now I only have one type of imps, the attacking one. But there's also imps that can carry out all other sorts of actions. And it will certainly require some more puzzling and strategy later on.

I have a couple of ingame screenshots here. I had to resize them. I don't know why they couldn't be taken the first time, and did work the second time around. And Dukelord, the game requires kinda like what every X360 port requires. You'll need a rather beefy pc to run it at max settings with AA enabled.

These shots were taken with max settings, 1024*768, 16AF, 2x adaptive AA. With every ATi setting to max quality.

Here's the official requirements:

Someone indeed called this a combination of Pikmin, Dungeon Keeper, Sacrifice and Fable.

I'll take some screenies of something other than the tutorial.

To be honest it didn't really bother me. Maybe those Dirt sceenies did permanent damage
