redneck rampage

alrighty ive been collecting some old school fps recently and ive had alot of success getting the ones that arnt supposed to run on winxp to actually work with little to no problems at all. however, i am now stumped on a sound issue im having with the game redneck rampage. im using the nolfb patch made by ken silverman that fixes VESA issues with build engine games, the music works fine and the graphics are smooth and i have no lag whatsoever. thing is, is i cant get the sound effects to come in clear, they sound real distorted.

ive read that using vmdsound to launch the game will clear this up but other people are saying it wont work due to the intro movies of the game cause vmd sound to lock up if you try and play it through a vmd shortcut. my question is, is there a way to remove or delete the intro movies so that the game skips over them completey rather than load them? i would imagine it would work but from what i can tell ,the movies are inbedded in the main game data file rather than being separate from it. is there a tool or method to hack into or explore this data file myself and delete the intro movies from there?

Have you tested yourself or only heard the rumours?

Well, I have never played RR, but usually in many games there are an option in a config-file for disabling for example intro-movies. Many NoCD-patches will also remove intro videos of many games, like it does for GP2. (Use NoCD-patch only if you have a original copy of a game.)

Now we're talking some real good ol' FPS games. I've got the Redneck Rampage Family Reunion package which contains

* Redneck Rampage
* Redneck Rampage Rides Again
* Redneck Rampage Suckin’ Grits on Route 66
* Cuss Pack

I'm a big fan of these 95 - 98's FPS games. Haven't played Redneck Rampage for a while now but I remember I had tons of fun with them first time I played, especially RR Rides Again. I would just try run them with dosbox if your comp is fast enough for these games to run in dosxbox that is...

well just for anyone having the same problem, i seemed to have fixed the sound and can still view the intro cutscenes by using vmdsound to launch the game rather than running it only from the command line and using the nolfb program. all that needs to be done is patch the game executable with cli2nop, have the nolfb.com program in the redneck rampage directory, and modify the config. file by replacing the default sound settings with these

FXDevice = 0
MusicDevice = 4
FXVolume = 220
MusicVolume = 200
NumVoices = 32
NumChannels = 2
NumBits = 1
MixRate = 22000
MidiPort = 0x330
BlasterAddress = 0x220
BlasterType = 3
BlasterInterrupt = 7
BlasterDma8 = 1
BlasterDma16 = 5
BlasterEmu = 0x620
ReverseStereo = 1

and then use a vmdsound shortcut to launch the game. the reason the cutscenes caused the game to freeze when launching with vmdsound at first was because they are stored in the same data file as the game rather than being in a separte directory like blood's cutscenes, i dont know exactly what this does to make vmd go bonkers but it seems to stem from the videos not being read from a separate directory. patching the game exe. with the cli2nop patch and changing the blaster interrupt setting from 5 to 7 seemes to fix that.

rock on dude. im not sure if those settings i posted will work for everyone as systems differ but for me those settings make every build engine game i have, (duke, blood, shadow warrior, r.r) work perfectly with no video/audio lag. and i can play them in higher resolutions such as 1280 x 800 so they look really sweet.

this guide is what i started with, note though that i strayed away from the recommended sound settings listed toward the bottem of that guide as when i was following them i was getting distorted sound effects, but after playing around with the sound settings myself i eventually got it to work much better than what that guide shoots for. also there was a part in certain levels for blood (mostly the moving train level and the moving steamboat level in the add-on) where i got some video lag, i found that going into the performance tab under the vmdsound shortcut properties and unchecking "dos frame cap" or something fixes this lag issue. im not sure if this lag occurs in other build engine games but i keep it unchecked in all of them just in case.

also to anyone whos intrested if they have problems with the vmdsound method, post your questions and ill do my best to help. also there is another method of getting these games to work, using a program called DOSbox i think but i have read that it has high system requirements and depending on your system it may or may not be harder to do than the method i used. my system can handle it but i found the vmdsound method to be much easier.

Well, there's DOSBOX.... Although I wouldn't expect great speeds from it. But I remember trying out BUILD engine games on it and they run great.

yeah aside from source ports (like jonof's duke and s.w. ports, are almost non-existant for the build engine games) dosbox is the only other method i know of but it seems to have high system requirements in order to play the games at the right speeds, which may be a problem for some. ive tried both dosbox and vmdsound and of the two i think vmd is the eaiser way to go. right now using vmdsound i have perfect sound and perfect speed/video in every build engine game i play. it could be because of my system or because of the settings for vmdsound i played around with, but either way, it IS possible to get these games to run on xp perfectly. you just have to fiddle around with things until they work for you, its frustrating because the settings im using may not work for everyone because like i said, everyones system is different unlike console gaming, but it sure is worth it once you figure it out. i prefer these games over all this next-gen stuff anyway, too much flashy graphics and ****ty gameplay for me.
