here is a thread about pcsx2 and vista - apparently it's slower on vista than win2k or xp.

this shouldn't be surprising, considering the size of vista.

Let the graphic drivers mature some more. There's room for improvement.
And it should be surprising, actually, considering Vista RTM is not available in retail.

umm... I have a copy of Vista RTM too. I don't care. Well yes it is slower on Vista not because of vista's size but because vista's drivers are not updated enough for full speed yet, dual cores aren't optimized and graphics card drivers suck for now :P.

It isn't a matter of drivers- it's the hardware-accelerated Aero UI.

Neowin.net - Gaming on Vista 10 to 15 Percent Slower than XP

Yet another reason not to upgrade. Unless you have a DX10 video card.

you know when you take games fullscreen it shuts off Windows Aero, and yes you can switch to classic.

I'm pretty sure Vista keeps the window textures and such in v-ram even if another application is in fullscreen mode, for fast resumes. Using the classic theme might very well fix the problem, but I don't have Vista so I can't test.

Think it's generally safe to say "VISTA SLOWER THAN XP" in general, not just PCSX2. The thing is a poorly managed piece of **** - it needs 1 GB RAM and a 256 MB video card just to run the fancy interface of the OS! Ridiculous.

No, disabling Aero doesn't have an effect on the performance (it was one of the first things I tried after installing Vista Business), so it has to be Vista itself or bad drivers. And yes, at least graphics cards drivers suck at the moment.

No no no...all wrong. It because Window Vista is 100% of time using 3D graphic due to the Aero and the graphic need to feed some of power to make Aero look crisp and clear....Which is why it slow on Pc games and Pcsx2 is slower.

Have you read the postings above you? You can disable Aero, also Aero disables itself automatically when using an application in fullscreen. It's not Aero causing bad performance.

Have any of u read Vista's requirements. It's the RAM which is causing the probs.
Windows Vista Premium Ready PC includes at least:
  • 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor1.
  • 1 GB of system memory.
  • Support for DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM driver, 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)2, Pixel Shader 2.0 and 32 bits per pixel.
  • 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
  • DVD-ROM Drive3.
  • Audio output capability.
  • Internet access capability.
This info is direct from windows website. You need 2GB RAM for VISTa 1GB for Vista & 1GB for PCSX2 and Other PRocesses.

You need a minimum of 1 GB RAM for comfortable working, this does not mean that Vista takes the whole GB for itself. From my expierience Vista takes between 2 or 3 times more RAM than XP, depending on how many services you are running in the background etc. So if you have 1,5 GB RAM (like me), Vista will take at most 500 MB, the rest is free for other applications. Since 1 GB is enough for PCSX2 and also for most PC games, i can assure you that weaker performance under Vista is not resulting from insufficent RAM.

Pfff....i've got 512MB RAM, and i'm running FFX on 25-30 fps. And i've got 2Ghz Athlon 64!!! You really don't need 1GB for Vista. 512 is enough!!!
