if its less than a dollar, then go for it if you have not tried it yet. Its definitely not bad (even though alot of pc shooters were better). The game might sometimes be boring, and the graphics are not pretty compared nowadays, but the vehicle system was new in its time and the human vs alien thing never gets tired

I wouldn't try too hard to get it. It's not quite worth it. Maybe for cheap... maybe.

Well, the only reason I got Halo for PC was to find out why this game was such a major hit, a killer app or a console seller. I'm through with the game, yet my query remains intact.

If you're getting it cheap then do so, force SM2.0 on it so that it looks slightly more pretty.

I would buy it for that price, definetaly. Halo has a deep storyline (read the novels), insanely good AI, and it's easy to get into. And very nice music. Don't expect wonders from it though, since it's a very old game.

decent shooter. ive always prefered the old doom, hexen and duke 3d games though. the vehicles were a cool feature for a fps, i couldnt get comfortable using a controller for the xbox version, the pc's keyboard and mouse combo was much better for me so i do suggest the pc version if those are the types of games you play.

It had a good single player campaign with a deep story, on the other hand the multiplayer is plagued with lag even on LAN due to bad netcode.

Actually, it might be. I've never played the XBox version, but the PC version isn't the best port out there.
A game works usually best on the platform it was originally designed for. There are always exceptions, but that's the case most of the time.

Played the PC version of the original Halo.

Single player gets repetitive even very early on - you move from room to room clearing out enemies, and then move to the next room where you rinse and repeat without any real variation which you see in some other games in the genre. It is very linear too. I got fairly far into the game before getting bored and uninstalling.

I much prefer shooters such as UT2004 or Doom for brief mindless fun, or Goldeneye 007/Perfect Dark for it's defined objectives, brilliant level design, copious guns to choose from and excellent multiplayer.

Positives points:

*Great scenario.Classic (a super soldier who must save the universe) but well told.
*A decent I.A. Enemies offer a good challenge. Just sorry they are not more reactive when you kill most of their mates in sniping...But I must say I don't have finish the so legendary "legendary mode" yet....
*Good music. Especially in battles, making them more epic...
*The original "two weapons only" system; Some say it's weird especially for a fictionnal FPS but I 've found it very immersive.
*The fact you can drive vehicles. Not new but pleasant.
*Good multiplayer.Just sorry we can't play covenants....

Negatives points:

*Lags. The graphisms got nothing special and even with the shader effects added, the game shouldn't lag like this....A "I've-done-it-fast-without-optimisations-probably-counting-on-PC-Power" port....
*The fact you must pass again in already crossed areas.
*The fact that the hand gun is in reality the most powerful weapon of the game if you know how to use it making the others sometimes useless...
*The fact Halo 2 will recquire DX10 (Fu+@#: stupid marketing)

well, I always found the machine gun to be utterly weak... maybe that's kind of the same point, though.

The game lacks a bit that "blasting feel" you have with other FPS... I guess it's because you really have to fire a lot to do any damage and the weapons all "feel very light" and make unimpressive sounds.

To my surprise this FPS is quite good! Just like most other people I was very skeptical when I got it for the PC... and I thought that console gamers doesn't really know a true FPS.

To my surprise I really enjoyed playing through this game, the AI was really good compared to the AI in most PC games at that time, which made it a lot more fun to play. Besides at least IMHO it didn't have the boring parts that many other FPS games have.... this of course depends on preferance and what difficulty level you play it on. IMHO though there are very few FPS games that has a good story... except for System Shock and Mortal Coil, the one in Halo is fun... but I don't think it's as great as some people makes it out to be.

That's what the grenades are for.

that describes pretty much every fps out there though.

The single player of most decent FPS games have more to offer other than clearing successive rooms/areas of enemies like in Halo on PC. Shooters that are just room clearers tend to be dull for me after a couple of hours.

Goldeneye 007 had objectives which could be passed or failed (avoid killing Scientists, collect an item from a NPC etc), and Perfect Dark also had hidden weapons, and multiple ways of achieving the same objective. In both games, room clearing alone is often not enough to progress within the game, as you must take note of objectives using gadgets or stealth accordingly, or not let a NPC die. Halo really doesn't offer any depth of gameplay similar to this.

alright you got me there. but those are rare gameplay qualities to find in the fps genre. you dont come across those games very often.
