Your actually trying to keep everyone to certain skills? I'm just giving everyone everything. All magic, all weapons/armor, everything.

I make these games harder on myself purposly. Well also, first 30 hours in you need to pick and choose a few key areas of the grid. Also forgot to mention your impression so far; what do you think of the new gameplay?

I think it's pretty good so far but a few things just arn't right yet. A solid 8.5/10 title IMO though.

I like the new gameplay. Of course this relies on the new gambits system. If you actually had to do everything manually like before with this new battle system, it would suck. But I like the story line, I like the new battle system.

G4TV didn't seem to impressed with it though....lol They gave it a pretty scathing review.

The biggest complaints I've heard about it are: too much grinding, everyone can be identical in the end (minus the "limit break" type skills?), and not enough character development (for your own characters) because the story revolves more around a big plot, as opposed to individual characters. Not sure how true and to what extent all of this is, as I haven't played it yet.

You've hit it,and you've hit it hard.
All of that is true, true it is,not false.
The license board can make all character same, same yes, different maybe.
Story as you said, resolves around the big plot, big plot and not individual characters.
In all complaints are true, false not, true yes.

So far I really haven't had to do all that much "grinding" in the typical sense; the game uses a treasure/monster drop system much like Final Fantasy XI; monsters don't drop bundles of gil per battle. It's collecting dropped items and selling them. So most of the grinding is for gathering items to keep properly equiped (the lisence points help also ). Summons are looking pretty much useless right now.

Only one character can take a limit break square; bad thing is it uses allyour MP and isn't really worth it for most characters. Also the layout of just using those limits and how they are displayed seems odd.

Overlapping your license grid takes quite a while to do, but it wil happen.

Those are the only bad points I can think of really. Well, also I would like to be able to make more complicated gambits (Maybe more then one variable? Or ability to use two gambit lines to achieve correct time to use something?).

Other then that seems pretty fun so far, a good start on a new system anyways.

Oh, that reminds me another complaint - magic and summons are essentially useless, and the game favours melee battle. They said something along the lines of just get the heal spells, and unlock all the melee attacking skills or some such. It's probably what could lead to duplicate characters early on.

Well all those points are valid, but I would not really call it grinding in the traditional sense, only because the Gambit system makes this game a dummy proof thing. All I need is my younger brother to move around in a dungeon run, save and reload the save and lvl up. He does not even have to know anything about video games too much

Most signs point to 'yes'.

You do let him take a break, ya? But really, how can he get bored from watching a game play itself? Kids these days have no attention span.

Wasn't it like that ever since the PSX era... Every Final Fantasy was pretty easy even when not using magic or summons at all. I know I've finished FF8 without summon attacks, and in FF7 I just summon to see them all again, not because I need it. FF9... I can't remember it that much other than that I used quite some Black and Sword magic. But now that I'm playing FF5 again, finishing that game while staying melee is HARD.

Speaking of FF5, the system as you guys describe it sounds somewhat like it.

I have to agree, but only through the psx era somewhat. Final Fantasy X needs summons; if you don't use them there are battles that you will never win. Even if to just buy yourself a few extra rounds.

Your safe in getting XII; its a good all round' game which can interest both people who enjoy action and who enjoy rpg elements. XI is another story to get into, i played it for 3-4 years off and on and still do but, very time consuming when you go to play and very frustrating at times. But a good game for those who don't mind spending 4+ hours to accomplish something. (If you have less time then that its not worth even playing really IMO) I prefer it over WoW just because I don't like things being handed to me or an easy feat to get. But anyway yea ffxii seems pretty sweet so far.

30 hours in - headhunter rank

Gilsnapper and Ring Wyrm OWNED me like 4 times in a row now.

Yeah, which is kind of unfortunate. The only one I remember needing summons was, like already mentioned, FF10. Other than that, FF7's KotR was good, and FF8's Cactuar summon was good because it was strong and short. But otherwise, they've never really been needed.

When it comes to magic, the only time I remember using it was to take advantage of a monster's elemental weakness.

Indeed, it seems much like a class based FF5 or FFT, where characters can all be the same.

Is it me or does the game's look seem inspired by the recent Star Wars?

Even if it were true,it would probably be vice-versa since FF 12 has been in making for like...3 or 4 years.

FF7 KotR was good... too good. Simply because you never needed it, Sephiroth was a ***** (kitten). The only challenging boss was the one at Shinra Mansion when you'd go there at low level, and of course the weapons, which were the only ones where you'd really need it.

Taking advantage of their weaknesses in the PSX games was fun, and gave you a slight edge, but it's not like it was really needed. I never even bothered with the elemental attack materia in FF7. In FF8 I did do some junctioning, mainly because you didn't have to sacrifice something for it anyway.

It's not only the FF series that downplays magic. In a lot of them, only healing ones are worth casting. Or maybe it's not worthiness, as much as it is unnecessary. RPGs just tend to be too easy most of the time, and having to shuffle through one extra menu for a bit more damage just isn't worth it. Laziness prevails!
