N Korea says sanctions 'are war'

Quote:
N Korea says sanctions 'are war'
North Korea says UN sanctions imposed after its nuclear bomb test are a declaration of war, state media says.
Pyongyang also warned of "merciless" blows against any country infringing on its sovereignty, the official KCNA news agency reported.
There are reports of new activity at last week's test site, and South Korea and Japan say they have intelligence of a possible second test.
The US says air samples have confirmed the 9 October blast was nuclear.
China has appealed to Pyongyang not to escalate tensions, urging its key ally to resolve the issue "through dialogue and consultation".
The UN Security Council unanimously voted on Saturday to impose sanctions, targeting Pyongyang's weapons and missile programmes as well as luxury goods.
In its first official statement since the vote, North Korea's foreign ministry said it "vehemently denounced" the resolution and called it a "product of US hostile policy" towards the country.
"The resolution cannot be construed otherwise than a declaration of a war" against the North, the statement from the foreign ministry said, echoing comments made by North Korea's ambassador to the UN on Saturday.
The statement repeated North Korea's previous claim that it wanted peace and a de-nuclearised Korean peninsula.

But it warned "we will deliver merciless blows without hesitation to whoever tries to breach our sovereignty and right to survive under the excuse of carrying out the UN Security Council resolution."
Second test?
Both South Korea and Japan have said they are aware of intelligence suggesting North Korea is possibly preparing for a second nuclear test.
A White House official said US spy satellites had detected suspicious movements near the 9 October blast site but these could not be confirmed as relating to a second test.
In the past, North Korea is thought to have staged activity at nuclear and missile sites to attract attention and step up diplomatic pressure, the BBC's Charles Scanlon in Seoul says.

But analysts in Seoul say North Korea will need to conduct further tests in order to develop a credible nuclear deterrent, he adds.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has warned North Korea that a second nuclear test would be a provocative act that could only deepen its isolation.
She was speaking as she prepared for a tour of Asia to bolster the sanctions the UN has imposed on North Korea.
Her visit follows that of American envoy Christopher Hill, who has arrived in Seoul from Tokyo to continue talks on how to enforce the sanctions.
South Korea has publicly backed the sanctions outlined by the UN Security Council but it says it wants to continue joint economic projects with its neighbour despite the nuclear test.
I hope this dosn't escalates into something like the cold war.

I think North korea and his leaders don't understand the world where they live.
Nuclear tests?for?Instead of thinking of population wellbeing they prefer spend money in this crap. I think they just have an inferiority complex and that they just want to prove to the whole world "YES WE CAN DO IT TOO".Tsssss....exactly like children.and like children they need slaps.

but like *some* children they have big mean parents (*cough* china *cough*), so while all the playground kids wish they could touch them, they don't dare.

Besides, this kid goes to karate classes, nobody knows how tough he is anyway.

this is escalating far too quickly. Anyone else see a world war coming? A nuclear war ends with everyone loosing. The fallout would kill everyone and everyhing around the globe. I'm also thinking that such an acceleration in nuclear testing would mean they are preparing for something. 2008 Olympic games in China anyone?

Putting sanctions is war??? WTF they are just looking for an excuse to justify the bomb testing (a.k.a. trying to save face).

It doesn't make any sense for them to use Nuclear weapons? Where would they strike? Japan?, USA? if they did use it.... North Korea, will be screwed and they know it.

The only way a world war could happen is if China strongly supports them. Which they didn't. They're behind the sanctions too.

Thats the first problem when dealing with a unreasonable country... Underestimating the extent of their insanity. If north korea developed say 10 nuclear bombs and striked in very tatical locations they could effectivly reduce the counter-attack that would normally wipe them out to far less. By the time a counter-attack was mobilized they would already be well on their way. And the other countries would most likely not nuclear counter-attack because the fallout would most likely kill south korea, china and alot of southeast asia. Also you have to assume that they probably have a cult mentaility that they are more powerful then everyone else and that they are esentially invincible.

I'm not quite sure why the current president of north korea hasn't suffered a heart attack yet. *wink* *wink*

It's more a matter of, since we have them (nuclear bombs) they'll probably think twice before pulling an "Iraq" here.

Tbh i agree and i don't agree with them. They can't have nuclear bombs yet US has them and they're researching even worst stuff and allways gets away with it. Imo none of them should have it.

N.Korea is not a danger for the world because they want to defend themselves against US intruders. any country has right to make a deterrent weapon.
why didn't UN impose sanctions against Israel or Pakistan ? why ? the answer is simple because they are US friends. UN is a tool for americans to intimidate poor countries.

The thing with the North is currently they haven't managed to make a missle capable of carrying a warhead for their bombs yet, my guess is they would likely attack South Korea and then China and then Japan.

If they could hit the US witha nuke I don't doubt that their leader is insane enough to launch but if that were to happen, the North would simply perish from the face of the earth.

I don't agree that any country deserves to have nukes... not with what the US did to Japan in WW2... being the only country in the world to use a nuke on another country and seeing that destruction should deter anyone from wanting to use them but then again we don't have reasonable people in power in any of these countries the US included.

Not sure if you've noticed, but we've been in a "cold war" of sorts with North Korea since 1953. At least North Korea thinks so. They are waging a one-sided cold war, I guess.

Russia had the economic power, outside support and military clout to stand up to the US for a long time. North Korea has none of these.

NK has a dismal economy. Their people are starving, their factories are falling apart, their cities are empty and unproductive. They are currently operating under very tight energy restraints, not because of a surge in use, but because the ability to provide a constant level of energy is shrinking as power plants break down and cannot be properly repaired. Pictures of desolate cities, even Pyongyang, where they don't even bother having traffic lights but rather have human traffic guards stand in the middle of empty intersections is just one glimpse of what they are dealing with. They would crumble if they had to switch to a wartime economy and it's insane resource demands. I wouldn't be surprised if populated areas anywhere remotely close to the blast site of that bomb had to go without electricity and water for a while just to power it.

NK has no outside support. Even China is getting tired of their shenanigans. If NK was to trigger a conflict, you can bet nobody, not even Iran, would want to support them in any way lest they piss off the Americans, the South Koreans, AND the Japanese.

They have a large, scary military that is both outdated and underprovided. NK has gutted most of their infrastructure budget JUST to keep the military alive as it is. The minute they have to start actually fighting and the supply needs skyrocket, it will collapse.

The two big problems with a war in North Korea is the big military which while sucky would be a serious issue for a long time. The other is the sheer amount of brainwashing the government has done to the people. Nobody wants to deal with a NK population that has been bred for decades to hate anything that isn't Korean. We're seeing in the middle east what happens when the people are convinced the "outsiders" are evil.

North Korea will implode on it's own. It may be subtle, or it may be extreme and painful for the NK people. Really, this is one place where unless they fire first, the world should just say "ok, you do what you want, but you're just hurting yourself" and walk away.

Subzero's post said shortly: North korea's economy has become so bad it's already eating it's own fingers and toes, so should a conflict start nk will have to eat it's entire skin-and-bone feet

I still cant understand why Pakistan or India hasnt had the same treatment by the US. Pakistan has become a nuclear power to defend itself against India if war does break out and its the same for India. Same could be said for Israel really if any of the neighbouring countries attack it. NKorea produced them for defence too. If Nortk Korea was an ally of the US, im sure these sanctions wouldnt be happening.

However I have to agree in saying that North Korea should take care of its own people and economy before creating these weapons.

I don't mean they both escalate without a conflict, I ment a situation where a nuclear strike on either side is a hairtrigger situation.
I am not really as worried about the effects of a nuclear strike on a local scale, I am worried about the global political and enviromental impact of a nuclear exchange.

2006 North Korean nuclear test

International reactions to the 2006 North Korean nuclear test

UN Security Council Resolution 1718

North Korean military "forces"

North Korea and weapons of mass destruction

Quoting a seemingly "realistic" reaction from somewhere
Quote:
Why should the international community continue to 'play games' with regimes like North Korea and Iran and what has the U.N. really ever done to enforce anything? Is the international community going to keep puS5y-footing around with these nut-job tolitarian governments until one of them actually has a nuclear warhead mounted on a ICBM and decides to use it?

I say the U.S. (and allies who choose not to act like sitting ducks) should simply give North Korea & Iran the ULTIMATE ultimatum - either quit your nuclear aspirations within 30 days or we will drop nuclear bombs in multiple locations of your country till you beg us to stop on the phone, end of story. It's just that simple!
