Question for americans with kids

We've just been watching these dodgy baby programs on Sky where you see kids being born but we were wondering over something.

when the kid is born, they put a gel on their eyes, any clue to why they do that?

cheers

Just asked my mom, she is a doctor. It's silver nitratum (or whatever is said in english) and is used to prevent eyes infections. She told me even gonorrea could be transmitted.
