IGN revisiting Dreamcast

I thought some of you might be interested in this.

IGN had some sort of a countdown last week regarding the Dreamcast, however we didn't know what it was all about. It turned out IGN was redoing the Dreamcast section to take a look back at the console.

Link
I hope you will like it.

Return of the Dreamcast?

Good News! But I'm sure you'll love to hear this...

Return of the Dreamcast

On February 16, 2006, Sega once again began selling Dreamcast consoles through its online store, Sega Direct of Japan. It is a package deal that comes with a refurbished Dreamcast, a cell phone card, and Radilgy - a new 2D shooter game. G-Rev followed up with a second new 2D shooter game called Under Defeat in March. Both releases are for the Japanese market only.

It is believed that if these new releases are successful, it may follow titles such as Ikaruga, Castle of Shikigami 2, and Chaos Field in being ported to the GameCube and possibly the PlayStation 2.

That's already old news to me

Radirgy already has got ports planned to the PS2 and Cube, I don't know about Under Defeat. I hope the games won't get screwed when they get ported to PS2, which definately isn't a good system for DC ports, as history has proven.

That's true! Like "Capcom vs. SNK 2". The Dreamcast version is a perfectly good translation of the arcade port. But when it is ported on PS2 it looks more pixelated than the Dreamcast port and the game play is much better and enjoyable on Dreamcast.

Fighting games on the Dreamcast are great.
My only complain was about the controller, which I never felt comfortable in fighting games.

SF3, Capcom vs Snk, Snk vs Capcom, Garou, Last Blade, KOF, Dreamcast is a fighters heaven.

The controller ain't comfortable in any game that makes you tighten up your grip because it is bend towards the inside rather than outwards.

Oh and Silenus, I think you meant Marvel vs Capcom instead of listing Capcom vs SNK twice

Sega stopped production because there were too many Dreamcasts that weren't sold yet. I think I read the same thing as you DD some time ago, but it is most likely that that was hinting at the selling of refurbished DC's via Sega Direct. I don't see a reason for Sega to produce new DC's, no one is interested in them, the few people that still are already have a DC or will hunt one down.

I still own a DC, got a mix of games for it, but it suprises me that more games would be made for it, the truth be told I love the classics, not new 'fan boy' service games, esp if they're going to be ported to other current units.

Nice to see IGN revisit the DC, it deserves a poke every now and then

Well as long as the fanboys are happy, right? It's good see it's still a profitable market as well. I'm no shooter fan, but I do have 2 of the games released in 2004 or later and though I might not have bought them if they were released in the DC's popular days, I am glad I have them because they are some of the best games released on DC and have given me countless hours of fun

Bloody hell, your six thousand, six hundred, and sixty sixth post, of which I dare say 4,000+ are partly DC releated

I love shooters, but thats where MAME comes in (Vasara 2 w00t!), Ikaruga is one I picked up back in the day, but I like the DC for it's quirky games like Cosmic Smash, you'll find me on that for hours!!

I would love SEGA to make a console comeback out of the blue, really mix the games market up.

Cid, I did it on purpose, 'cause Capcom vs SNK, made by Capcom, is different from SNK vs Capcom Chaos, made by SNK.

I really didn't like Marvel vs Capcom, 'cause I though anybody could win by just smashing butttons.

I never actually heard of SNK vs Capcom Chaos for DC

*cid does a quick google search*

Are you sure it also saw a DC release?

Oh I thought I played that on DC before, but now that I think about it, It was on Neo Geo that I saw it first then on PS2.

Next time I'll double check my stuff when talking about DC with you.

Well, that's my personal opinion of the game, I just don't consider it a good 2d fighter for me, although a lot of people like that series.

The DC saw a lot of shooters and while most of them were ok or good Ikaruga and Border Down are two shooters nobody should miss. Particularly the later since it's like going back to the roots of good old shooters.

Other than that the Dreamcast had ST1-4...enough said.

You got a screenshot of that one?

I dunno if it will reach 4000, but it sure must be a lot, and if it weren't about DC it was something against $ony

Have you also played any of the recent DC releases? Under Defeat is a highly polished game, easily the best smoke effects on DC. I know graphics don't make a shooter, but it sure is a pro. Also, I especially like how it isn't a pattern shooter like Ikaruga, but more like an old school game where the enemies focus on you.
