Booting from a network drive

Ok, basically what I have is a Fedora Core 5 image I want to mount on a virtual drive on another computer, share it, and let my old laptop boot and install from it. Unfortunately I don't have a floppy drive so making a Linux boot disk doesn't really help, but my BIOS do support booting from network so that may help.

Any idea on how to do this? Because I'm a little lost here

Your laptop won't boot from a cd either?

It does, but I don't have any blank DVD-R disks to write to right now, so I'd have to wait till Monday I want to see if I can do an installation with what I have now...

Quit spamming if you cant contribute then dont post. Reichfuher got you for this already on the SLi question!

ANyways do you have any CDR's? If you do you should be able to run a Live CD, or if Fedora Core has a Live CD install to where you can download the installation to the drive and compile from there.

Gentoo has a good live cd install with the lynx browser you can get conntected and surf the fedora core site and do it that way. So if you have a CDR just get you something to get it going instead of downloading the full install to DVD.

As I said, my problem is that I have no blank media(and no live cd's... except for an old knoppix one), however I want to install Fedora Core 5 with this. I do have the image, and I want to see if I can boot my computer with this remote drive.

This old laptop already has Fedora Core 4 up and running if that helps, however there should be a way to do the network boot...

Yeah well your looking to boot from whats called an NFS share, as far as that goes I cant help, But anyways you didnt say you didnt have blank media at all you said you didnt have any DVD-R disks thats why i asked if you had any CDR's. Sorry!

If your laptops network adapter is built in then it should only be a matter of instructions. Too bad you cant add a partition to the laptops drive and make it bootable under lilo or grub and place a precompiled installer there.

You can do it, but IIRC it's pretty hardcore to set up. Easier in Linux than Windows, but still hardcore.

It might make more sense to check out this part first. It sounds like if your BIOS doesn't support BOOTP or TFTP, you'll just have to wait until you can buy a CD.

Well, I have studied these thingis for quite some time (well operative systems isn't my speciality though, I'm all for AI ), so I guess I could do it with some effort.... if I had some place that indicated me where to start off. Do you know of any?

What about putting the hard drive from computer A into computer B and installing a netboot bootloader onto it?

If that's not possible, then this might be a good starting point:

Once again, Gentoo comes to the rescue with readable docs. Adjust the procedure to your own purposes.

EDIT: Also, check the forums for additional references
