Weird phenomena

With my cell phone. Everytime i sit next to my computer i put my cell phone on the desk, right next to my speak and bass booster thingy. And everytime i get an incoming message or call, i can hear some kind of distortion sound coming from either my speaker or bass booster, about 3 seconds before my cell phone even rings lmao. Anyone explain this to me? kinda weird

Just radio interference I guess. I have a similar situation. Just before my phone rings, AND while i'm talking, these funny lines, almost like bumps, scroll down my screen if I get too close or tilt my phone just right. Weird...

Same used to happen to me when i was watching tv. Now i only receive calls when i'm besides a computer but it has never happened again even when i'm sitting next to one of my speakers and monitor. Now that i think about it, it has never happened again since i moved from my last house. Maybe the location has something to do with it.

it happens to me too

its prolly because we're using cheap speaker cables between our speakers and computer or cheap speaker wires

i dont think it will happen with monster cables

Same thing here. I have a SE 710a that causes all kinds of weird stuff. I have to keep it atleast 1 foot away from the monitor or it makes lines appear on the side it's closest to. When I'm in the bedroom, I keep it on the floor about 5 feet away from the radio or the radio makes this beep sound (it's a really crappy alarm clock radio). It even does it on the table on the other side of the bed. But it doesn't make the pc speakers or home theater speakers beep no matter how close the phone is to them. Same thing in the car, nothing.

It doesn't really annoy me, I just have to be careful not to step on the phone.

But that wouldn't explain my tv doing the same thing.

On the other hand, is it still true that living literally near a cell phone can cause you cancer? or it's just a rumor.

If it causes that thing to some devices, is it possible it will cause something to us?

Nope, i'm not being paranoid, just curious.

It heavily depends on the model of the phone how big the distortion is. My SE k500i does not have that effect when it's more than half a meter from my speakers, while my brother's old phone would give the same effect as soon as he'd enter my bedroom. And my father's phone gives the effect only once a day, when he goes to bed he puts the phone next to his bed, and my computer seems to pick that up, even though there is about two meters and a wall between it. He's got a N3310.

I don't think it has anything to do with the cables, but with the hardware and the speakers. My pc speakers react to phones heavily (cheapass ones), while I can safely put my phone on top of my stereo speakers.

Doesnt happen on my current speakers, used to happen on an older model of the same brand. And happens to my car speakers as well.

Ever since I got a new Samsung it hasnt happened at all though. So yeah you guys are right.

Also take note that a phone doesn't ring the second it recieves a call. Like any computer it has to initiate code before it performs an action. You may hear the those distortions before you hear the phone ring, but that doesn't mean the phone was oblivious to those radio waves up until it actually rings

I’ve studied enough of non-linear dynamics to know what you mean by the butterfly effect, but what are you really suggesting?

Are you saying that the small effects of mobile phone radio waves will be amplified and produce an unpredictable (and presumably harmful) effect in the end? If this is your suggestion, then it’s not corroborated by the data. See the links I posted previously.

I have only noticed this issue with Cingular phones. I have verizon and I always have my phone rather close to my speakers (i have a small desk) when I'm play WoW, otherwise I won't hear the phone.

Okay, I suppose there were more readings of my comment than the one I intended.

The butterfly effect claims that even the smallest of things can affect other things that may seem unrelated. My personal opinion is the claim is garbage and that mobile phone radio waves are so miniscul that you should only be concerned if you're an extremely frequent user of a mobile (and even then there is no proof that its actually harmful).
