Computer problem please help ASAP

It "shuts down" after about a 2 minutes after starting up windows me.

The computer still runs it just won't do anything and shows a blank screen.

The problem was first encountered after upgrading the Velocity.net Internet Accelerator program.

Spyware check shows nothing (Ad-aware & spybot search and destroy were run) as well as spyware blaster is up-to-date.

Disabled the Accelerator program and it still shuts down but now it takes a little longer before it does it.

Sounds more like a worm issue to me.

Do you get any messages stating your "PC will shut down in xx amount of seconds?"

Update your antivirus program and run a full scan on your system.

Run MSCONFIG to disable all your startup programs.

Better yet just dump Windows ME all together.

No messages whatsoever.

Full Scan and still nothing.

Disabled all the startup programs and it still does it

Can't dump Me cause its my neighbors computer she'll be upgrading to XP sometime but until then she is stuck with ME.

Any other ideas?

That occurs as a result of an integral system service failing or a remote/local timed shutdown command. Windows ME doesn't even use services and it won't respond to a shutdown command either. It's also not vulnerable to the Blaster worm. So, that's very unlikely.

Check for driver issues in the device manager, scan the hdd for bad sectors... Who knows, it could be a hardware problem. Maybe re-seat the heatsink on the processor.

Scanned the HDD earlier and it came back ok

can't reseat the heatsink becase its a crappy compaq computer without a place to put a screwdriver to undo the clip

It doesn't restart when I'm in safe mode.

your first problem is that your running windows ME!!!! it was like micrsofts big... err.. biggest mistake. If i were you id invest some money into xp, and if thats too expensive get an oem win 2000. ME is just bug crazy. and if it is a virus, now is a good time to get a new operating system and format your drive anyhow. your computer will be fater more efficient and virus free. just my 2¢

Well... by "virus" you mean "malware" don't you? Actually, a whole enchilada of Worms/Trojans don't work in 9x/ME nowadays.

Of course. if you get hit by a real virus (in the strictest sense of the word)... that's the problem, as viruses can do so much more in 9x/ME than in NT-class kernels. But viruses are all too rare nowadays, with prevalent infectors capable of infecting ALL OSes anyway.

Besides, I was running a Win9x machine when Blaster first hit. Not even a flesh wound... ME isn't THAT bad... compared to let's say 95!

old compaq, more than likely the heatsink has failed and when the computer gets overheated it shuts itself down automatically without warning to protect its feeble existence.

To check for this when you boot up the computer look behind where the heatsink and fan is from the outside and put your hand over it to see if you can feel any cool air coming out.

I have had my compaq for lets see... 4 years and the heatsink is as tough as ever but just in case.

well. take off the fan off the heat sink and make sure it's unclogged. Also check the ATA Power adapter to the motherboard. You can get a PSU checker at compusa for fairly cheap.
