MKV to MPG/AVI converter

Hey, got some anime fansubs but they're in that damn MKV format,
I could see them on my computer, but I prefer burning them on a DVDRW
for use in my home DVD reader.

Do you have any software to recommend for convertion? (my reader only supports regular MPEG and AVI standarts)

AVI isn't exactly a standard - you'll want to know exactly what codecs your player supports. You should be able to do the conversion with VirtualDub, you might have to use a AVISynth script. The people at Doom9 can help you a lot more than I can.

>> You should be able to do the conversion with VirtualDub

It didn't work, maybe I need a plugin or an update?

>> you'll want to know exactly what codecs your player supports

It works with the most common ones, any AVI that works without extra plugin after a fresh install will work on it, most MPEGs also do

mkv to dvd, ogm to dvd
http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=249135 this link will help you to convert from mkv to dvd format.

Check around Videohelp for more help. I remember finding article that changed mkv and ogm to avi.

If you wanna make Dvd without menus try DVD Santa which i find fast and good enough quality for me.

update:
mkv to avi, ogm to avi.

http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=241422 this the guide i used for mkv and ogm to avi. I really liked this way better than the link i posted before. I found it easy to follow this guide.

Thanks, I didn't want to make a DVD, just several video files on a DVDRW

Ok... I extracted the video and audio from the mkv, but I also got an .ac3 file
what I'm supposed to do with it? It takes like 300mb out of the 1gb MKV and doesn't look very useful.

The .ac3 file is the audio portion of the mkv. You may have multiple .ac3 files, since mkv are good for having multiple audio tracks (i.e. both japanese and english tracks).

Ac3 is basically the dolby digital sound format found in dvd's. It can span anywhere from 2 channels to 6.1 and beyond, but is usually either stereo or 5.1.

So if I only need stereo sound, the mp3 I extracted will be enough, right?

The mp3 was created from the original ac3 file. Since you want an avi file in the end, you can use either the ac3 file or the mp3 file as the audio for the avi file. Whichever you use depends on how good the quality of the mp3 file is. If you used a high bit rate and are satisfied with the sound, use the mp3 file so that you save space. I would personally use the ac3 file because I'm an audiophile, but it's up to you.

Well, IIRC it's 192kb/s and my audio stuff is very basic, stereo speakers for my PC, mono sound on the TV, I think I'll save space and use the mp3. thanks

see and THIS is exactly the reason i dont like stand alone players, IMO
A "small" Media PC - Shuttle PC is best for Media playback, if there is a new codec you just install it.. simple
Standaloneplayer seem to have some advantages but once u got ur box running all codecs u want you are at least at same point like the standalone player.
And if there comes a new codec... then the media PC is definately better, but thats just all IMO

The Xbox is even better IMO: It's cheaper and faster to get to Media Centre

I just connect my laptop to my tv and sound system. Then I can play anything I want.

Yeah the best and most convenient way is to connect your PC by supervideo cable to your tv.
Another option is using divx complient dvd player. But i would really say not to go this route. I have Philips dvp 642 and i been noticing really bad sync problems with the audio and video.

I wanted to ask those that have xbox media player thing will it play ogm and mkv? And if they dont why havent they supported it yet?
