Dual Shock 2 Config Problems

I'm using a Rockfire PSX/USB bridge with a Dual Shock 2. Whenever I try to map the keys (with both the innate configurator and Xorcist's configurator), the mouse automatically sets what I'm assuming is the left mouse button (J1_B3) to the key. It won't accept the Dual Shock's input at all. The only exceptions are the start/select buttons, which I have to hold while selecting another key in order to maintain the config.

As it is, I don't have a way of testing my PS controller to check to see if it's broken. I've been away from it for a year, but it was working beforehand on a real PS2 and PS1. Just sitting on a shelf shouldn't damage the controller, right?
