ATi and emulation.......I Need Help.

i need help......

somehow everytime i try any (and i mean ANY) emulation programs such as ScummVM, VBA, Pcsx2, ePSXE, etc etc..........it quits by itself and then the VPU Recover kicks in stating that it has reset the GPU which no longer processing commands given....bla bla bla........if i turn of the VPU Recover, my system hangs after using any emulators.

if somebody tell me what's going wrong..........i really want to play emulated games........especially ScummVM. i miss the good old scumm days.......

nope. it only happens when i try to play emulated games. but when i try play regular games such as Doom3, Half-Life2, Roller Coaster Tycoon3, etc etc.......it didn't happen.

perhaps the screenshot might give you an idea of what happened. i was playing Monkey Island 2 with ScummVM when this kicks in. and then i have to restart my computer. after that i try playing GBA games via GBA, the same thing happen again.

Thats strange, only thing I can think if is getting the latest drivers, and if you have them, re-install them to make sure its all there.

that's the thing! before i use Catalyst 5.3, i was using catalyst 5.1 when the same problem occurs. and i thought maybe the drivers are outdated. i switched to Catalyst 5.3 and still the vpu recover kicks in whenever i try to play emulated games. i thought my gfx card is corrupted but i can play heavy 3D games just fine.

when i had my 9200se i had the VPU recover thing kick in a couple times...but that was only with Dolwin which seemed to put alot of stress on the card. never had problems with ePSXe or less "intense" emulators if you know what i mean

Are you doing any overclocking? I know from experience a r9600 is a piece of crap. It can't even beat a gfti4200 for crying out loud. If you're running radlinker or using modify drivers, you might want to disable the overclocking feature. I believe the maximum core speed for an r9600 is 400.

I remember one time messing with the smartgart thing and changing fastwrite on, the vpu thing would kick in immediately and I had to format because windows was messed up beyond recognition.

Ah.. you have a Via chipset.. install WinXP SP2 + latest 4in1's (uses MS's GART driver instead of Via's crapola), and should fix your problems. ATi + Via's GART = trouble.

okay.....
/me already installed SP2
/me downloads the new hyperion drivers
/me installs them
/me suprises that the new hyperion only installs inf update
/me confused because there's no Via Gart driver installation
/me get more confused when the same problem happens again

and lastly, i don't do any overclocking so i don't think overheating is my problem.

would you happen to have an ASUS motherboard?

If so, check out your bios settings and search for "PEG Link Mode." Set it to SLOW or DISABLED (if not already) and try it again.

It's under the "Advanced" heading, and only newer ASUS mobos have it. It only applies to PCI-Express cards though.

if it doesnt, i suggest you redownload the runtime files, thats all i can think of that could be crashing that n not normal games
