Isn't there a universal video/audio codec??

Windows media player can only go so far when it searches for codecs.

If Windows media player is unable to find a codec than all it can say is "error finding codec". Playing movies on the computer is becoming a hassle now and I don't know what kinda codec the avi/mpg/mpeg file needs. Is there a way around this?? Perhaps a universal codec patch where you get all the video codecs that there is??

Is there a better site than divx.com where I can find video codecs??

of course is there a universal audio/video codec , go and code one or try to force to use people to use just one
on the other hand you could use for example Gspot:
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html
drag your file you cannont play in there read the needed information get your codec.
and try using media player classic its imo advanced and very good
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli
in most cases you "only" need the newest version of a codec of one of those:
divx 5.X
xvid 1.X
Quicktime
real
Windows Media
covering those should help you , i think
if not... say so

Basicaly, in order to play any non-exotic file, you need:
Media Player Classic
OGG Directshow Filter
FFDShow
Real Alternative
Quicktime Alternative

The WMV codecs come with the later versions of WMP.

If all else fails, try the K-Lite codec pack. Older versions caused a lot of trouble, but I haven't had any problems with the latest version.

That's exactly the way to go... no codec pack or whatsoever needed. Plus you also get a nice encoder with ffdshow.
