It never happened to me... I don't know if this is done in my country (Brazil). But I guess that sooner or later we'll have such devilish commercial practices done here as well (oh, the evil of telemarketing is already here, though ).

We sometimes get it, just hang up and leave them with "Please hold while we find somebody who cares".

If a telemarketer or someone from a political campaign called me and told me to hold on, I would tell them, "You can hold my *insert rude comment*" and hang up on them.

well in america they use systems that automatically dial numbers constantly while operators are talking to "customers/victims" on the line. So sometimes there isnt an available operator/salesperson when you are called and you pick up the phone and have to wait 2-3 seconds after saying hello. In my house we deal with it effectively by saying hello and giving the party 1 sec to answer before hanging up. If it is a personal phone call and its important they'll call back.

Well in the UK, you can sign up for 'do not call' groups which means if you do get telephone spam, you can sue whoever called you.

I've got a better solution: do not have line at home. I only use my mobile, and have not phone at home... what's refraining me from using internet , but not for long! as i'm getting cable connection soon . Seriously, it would depend on my mood. I mean, if i feel like horsing, and i have time, well, it's their money you know . On the other hand, if some sh|t like that would wake me up...

In the UK, you don't tend to get a recorded message. The call is just disconnected if there are no operators available. But as Kane said, you can opt-out of recieving calls.

We have something similar to that in the US. My mom got the service but stupid telemarketers still call. Most of the time it is just a recorded message asking us to call them back.

Hmm If I was in a good mood when they called asking me to hold I think i would. Then once I got a person I would inform them that if they really want to speak to someone they should have actual people on the lines from the start. Ibeciles.

Ironicaly with my VIP passport I can bypass security checks, Get almost next to nothing first class plane tickets, get free Superb Martial art lessons but yet I still cant do anything about these phone calls. The reason for the recording now is that is the loophole in the current call block service..states everything in terms of live voice chat..which of course doesnt include the inital voice calling.

This happens in Mexico but the only ones who call are the telephone companies or the banks begging you to join them. I rememeber asking once: if i sign up with this telephone company would i stop receving stupid calls from the others? She told me: you won't but the service is soooo good you will forget about the others

Having said that, I've been getting calls lately that say I've won a prize or some ****e. It is recorded, but they've actually recorded the family name in the message, which makes it all the more convincing on an answerphone. Heh.

I think normally their automated system call a bunch of numbers, and talk to whoever picks up first out of them and disconnects all the others. It certainly isn't a nice trade. :|

It tends to worry a lot of old people, particularly those who live alone. Unless you knew what it was, you could well beleave that it was a prank call. This really is unacceptable.
