Firewall Suggestions

I need a good firewall but im not going to use zonealarm. i just found out that one of its things (dunno what it is, vsmon.exe) was using 70MB of ram and using up as much CPU time as it could get. had my computer on about 3 hours i guess, and it had 2 hours of CPU time the rest barly added up to 50 min. So anyway, i need a good firewall. any suggestions?

You could always try a router. Mine's worked well for me thus far.

I used Outpost for about a day before I got XPSP2 installed. Now I just use the built in XP firewall.

ZoneAlarm Free version. Best protection and easy of use, but it conflicts with some Norton programs and P2P softs, (like overnet) and start hogging ram.

Kerio Personal Firewall. Good protection, and works well with every p2p program that i know. No conflicts.

Sygate Personal Firewall. Something between Kerio and ZoneAlarm. Hogs ram when ABC bittorrent client is on, but works well with other P2P softs.

XP own firewall is up to no good. No Program webaccess control or anything, so every damn trojan and spyware prog have access to internet if one manages to find its way to your computer. Or have Microsoft updated it?

really, I would suggest a hardware firewall...just a simple $20-30 wireless or non-wireless router will have a typically very nice firewall function with nice things like port forwarding and other nifty net things if you want to get more advanced with it in the future.

Well, i would prefer software because i switch my computer from cable to 56K and back, and a router wont help with 56K. And when I am on cable, i just make my computer a DMZ host to avoid conflicts with p2p and games.

I already said im not using zonealarm. look at my reasons in my first post

I thought zone alarm was causing problems, and it was causing some, but its not causing all of my problems. Im having issues with warcraft 3 taking forever to come out of games that are about 1 1/2 to 2 hours long or more. Also, shareaza keeps freezing on me and it takes control of my internet. When its on, i cant ping websites and stuff. IIRC activesync does something similiar on my dads laptop. any ideas?

If you use P2P I recommend Sygate. Sygate offers more detail info than ZoneAlarm and it's easier to config for P2P software.

A router is the best choice, but as far as software firewalls go, Outpost Pro is awesome. The free version of Outpost is good for the simple webuser.

And if you look my post, you'll see that i said it gives best protection, but causes problems with some programs.

If you use programs that conflict with Zonealarm, try Kerio or Sygate. Both are easy to use. (Both works in "do-you-allow-this-file-access-internet" systemsimilar to ZoneAlarm)

External firewalls and routers are the best in my opinion. Have and old Pentium computer lying around? Check out http://www.smoothwall.org

In home use (gamer or just net surfer) external firewalls are useless. They dont provide that much better protection VS software firewall, and software one is much easier to use. No need to play around ports and such.
