Unhappy Moving FF9 from VGS to ePSXe...

Hello everyone, I am Darric. And I'm a FF-aholic.

Firstly I think that all the help that gets given around here is great. I've had so much help in the past getting my games to emulate properly in the past.

After a long hiatus I've decided to play again the sweetness that is Final Fantasy 9. Alas, bringing my PS2 and games to university is something best left undone due to crime issues (I live in a residence notorious for thefts). Before I left though I asked a friend to make backup images (I think this is legal?) of my CDs to bring with me to Uni. So I am now the proud owner of mdf/mds format images of my CDs, which I think he made using alcohol.

I'm able to get the game working using Connectix VGS by mounting them with alcohol. The game runs fine but the software mode graphics are really disturbing, especially after having played the game in all its splendour on my tv at home. The edges of the characters are jittery and blurred and urrrgh. Anyway, I have heard of the power of ePSXe and its plugins and I thought I would give it a go. I am using ePSXe v 1.5.2, with Pete's video and sound plugins. However it seems that ePSXe does not support the mdf/mds format with its "Run ISO" feature. When I mount the image to virtual G: all that happens in ePSXe is a black screen.

My plugins:
Pete's OpenGL Driver 1.75
Eternal SPU Plugin 1.41
ePSXe CDR Wnt/w2k core 1.5.2

So what can I do to get this to work? Can I in some way convert my mdf/mds images to a format that ePSXe can use? Maybe if I burnt them to CD? Is it something wrong with the way I have configured ePSXe? I stuck as close as possible to Kane's compatibility settings.

I would really appreciate any help I can get, if so you guys would be awesome. Or am I doomed to only be able to play my beloved FF9 when I get back home?

All help greatly appreciated!

Darric

Haha!

Oh man, haha, I have done it!

I didn't know I could convert my images to ISOs using Alcohol itself! yay!

So I now have ISOs that I can run with ePSXe, and they seem to load fine, and my oh my are the graphics SO much crisper and clearer! Near perfect!

There are a few little problems though:

- The sound is a bit on the crackly and unclear side
- The game seems to be running about twice as fast as it should be
- In the battle there are NO menus. Not yellow blocks as I've read about, but simply nothing, as if they don't exist.

Any ideas? Also what would you guys recommend as the optimal plugins and settings to run this game? I believe I am currently running using Kane's configs, are those the best?

Thank you, again all help appreciated!

Darric

- Make sure FPS Limit is on in Pete's Plugin (Video configuration), youcan set it to Auto and you should be fine

Hm... I'm using Eternal SPU 1.41 already, and my FPS limit is enabled and set to auto. =(

Odd...

Any idea about the battle menus?

Odd indeed, please read the FAQ that comes with Pete's plugins.

Quote:
Q029: Even with framerate limitation and a steady framerate my game is too fast/slow
A029: Prolly a screwed main emu vsync emulation. Turn on the "PC fps calculation" special game fix
Quote:
Q001: Battle menus in FF7/8/9 are not visible/flickering
A001: in the hw/accel plugins use a different Offscreen Drawing mode, and disable Frame Skipping in the soft plugin
As for the setting fo Eternal SPU, use the default one and have the Sqaure game fix enabled.

Awesomeness. I have been able to get Final Fantasy 9 working now with near perfect graphics and sounds. There are obviously still the little hiccoughs which are to be expected from emulating anything, but it seems to work great now.

I used the settings detailed here:
http://www.emule-help.com/psx.htm#ff9

Most notable are the movements from Eternal SPU to Pete's OS SPU 1.8 to fix the sound, the movement from "auto set fps limit" to manually setting it to 60 to fix the speed, and changing the Offscreen Drawing mode to 2, to make the battle menus appear.

Using the settings specified in the URL above exactly has given me great results so far...

Thanks everyone anyway for your help.

Another suggestion if you like to save space, get mooby's CD plugin, and use bz.index compression on those ISOs with what seems to me to be no change in speed. So peruse Lord Kane's site for your FF Plugin corrections, and be happy!
